Girls show off their footballing technique

11:12am Tuesday 17th June 2008

WINKLEBURY Football Complex played host to the annual Hampshire FA girls' sevens tournament.

It was the sixth year of the event and 19 clubs from across the county entered teams into under-12 and under-14 age groups.

The second day of the Basingstoke football festival saw the under-14 teams in action, with Tadley Calleva and Oakley providing the local interest.

Tadley made it all the way to the semi-finals, where they were beaten 1-0 by Poole Town.

Earlier, they won their group, having opened up with a 2-0 win over Southampton Saints Yellow.

That was followed by a 0-0 draw against AFC Portsmouth Girls and then a 2-0 win over Sandown SSP.

They then beat Mudeford Phoenix Flames 2-0 and drew their final game 0-0, only to lose to Poole in the semi-finals.

Oakley finished fourth in the other group of six teams, losing 2-0 to eventual finalists Poole in their first game.

They then recorded a 1-0 victory over Romsey Town and a 3-0 win over Osborne, before suffering defeats against Camberley Town Raiders (2-1) and eventual winners Southampton Saints (9-0).

The previous day, the under-12 teams were in action, with Camberley Town beating Southampton Saints 1-0 in the final.

Both semi-finals were decided by penalties, with Poole Town and Cowplain Youth the unlucky losers.

The tournament proved a great success and every game was officiated by aspiring referees, most of whom recently completed basic refereeing courses.
