THE annual Basingstoke Town Colts Youth six-a-side football tournament, which takes place this weekend, promises to be the biggest so far.
Tournament manager Kevin Brewer said: "It seems we say this every year, but this year's event will be our biggest yet, with 214 teams booked to appear - an increase of 10 per cent on the previous record.
"More important than the numbers themselves though, it's particularly gratifying to see how many clubs enter year after year because they enjoy it so much.
"They include teams from well outside our normal area. We hope this year will be no exception."
The recent rain has made preparation of the club's Water End ground difficult.
"The ground has taken much longer than usual to dry out," said Brewer.
"However, thanks to a great deal of hard work by our groundsman, Vic Wingfield, and a concerted effort by the club committee, everything is coming together very well."
The club celebrates its 21st anniversary this year, having been formed in 1987 as Bramley Select.
The current name was adopted in 1997.
The tournament takes place this Saturday and Sunday at Water End, just off the A30 near the Red Lion pub.
Morning sessions kick off at 9am and afternoon sessions at 2pm. Parking costs £2, including a free programme.
No dogs are allowed on the ground, however.
