READING are still without a point this season after crashing 1-0 at home to Bolton Wanderers.

However, they moved off the bottom on goal difference after QPR lost 7-1.

The Royals have now lost all three opening league fixtures for the first time since 1959/60 and are stranded one place off the bottom of Championship table with zero points.

Substitute Yanic Wildschut notched the winner for the Trotters with almost his first touch, just three minutes after coming on for the second half.

It was also former Royals legend Phil Parkinson’s first victory against his old club in six attempts as a manager, sending the unbeaten visitors up to fifth.

As for Reading, this was another disappointing display, especially off the back of an impressive Carabao Cup victory over Birmingham City in midweek.

Clement’s men simply lacked the required quality in the final third to unlock a rock-solid Bolton defence superbly marshalled by David Wheater and Mark Beevers.

Royals did have their moments, with Yakou Meite and Sam Baldock both unlucky not to score.

But the visitors also looked threatening on the break and showed greater composure in the box when it mattered most.

Clement made four changes from the side that knocked out Birmingham City on Tuesday.

Vito Mannone, skipper Paul McShane, David Meyler and Liam Kelly made returns with Sam Walker, Tiago Ilori and Leandro Bacuna dropping to the bench and Mo Barrow missing out through injury.

Royals found themselves pinned back in the early stages due to Bolton’s fast start during which Josh Vela’s shot deflected narrowly wide.

But the hosts almost went in front in the ninth minute through John Swift.

New signings Marc McNulty and Baldock linked up nicely before the latter was hauled back 25 yards out.

Swift, who scored from similar range on Tuesday, hit it perfectly only for Ben Alnwick to push his effort away at full stretch.

McNulty then saw an effort blocked moments later before Baldock skied a shot into the south stand from outside the box with 21 minutes gone.

Six minutes later, Royals went agonisingly close to an opener again.

Meite pinched the ball off Whether as he looked to clear McNulty’s pass before knocking it around Alnwick.

But a last-ditch tackle from Beevers saw Meite’s shot deflect wide of a gaping net, before referee James Linington turned down Reading’s appeals for a penalty.

However, Royals were let off the hook themselves in the 33 minutes when Josh Magennis found Will Buckley in acres of space, but Mannone was equal to the Bolton winger’s shot.

Clement’s men hit back two minutes later, Meite finding Baldock whose left-footed drive was punched clear by Alnwick.

Mannone made another save at the other end after Swift had been robbed by Magennis.

Then Meite won a corner, but failed to direct his header on target from Kelly’s flag-kick just before the break.

Parkinson made a change at the interval and sent on Wildschut for Buckley.

And it was Wildshut who broke the deadlock three minutes after the restart with almost his first touch.

Noone’s ball over the top caught Royals’ defence flat-footed and Wildschut raced through before slotting past Mannone.

Clement’s men searched for a response and saw Baldock curl an effort wide of Alnwick’s far post after good work from Blackett.

And moments later Andy Yiadom found Swift in space only for the midfielder to slice a shot way over the bar.

Clement turned to his bench with 18 minutes to go and threw on Jon Dadi Bodvarsson and Bacuna for McNulty and Meyler.

Bodvarsson almost made a similar impact as Wildschut, but his shot deflected narrowly wide after Swift had teed him up.

And Royals simply lacked the nous to break down the Trotters as they piled bodies forward in the closing stages.

Late substitute Adrian Popa fired into the side netting from the last play of the game to sum up another frustrating afternoon at the Madesjki Stadium.

Reading face two touch away fixtures next week when they go to Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday (7.45pm) and Aston Villa on Saturday (3pm).
