BASINGSTOKE Town wrapped up their pre-season campaign with an impressive 3-0 win over visiting Llantwit Major from South Wales.

However, the home side did not have it all their own way as the Welsh visitors started the better.

They forced two corners in the first minute, but the Dragons came roaring back and a Sam Deadfield cross to the back post, saw Sam Argent’s volley fly across the face of the goal.

As the first half progressed, Town’s Deadfield started to pull the strings in the midfield and was denied the goal of pre-season.

This was after he beat three visiting players and shot from 25 yards out, only to see the ball come back off the post.

However, in the 25th minute, the same player opened the scoring.

This was from a sweetly struck free-kick, which went over the wall and into the bottom corner.

As the half ended, Josh Jones ran through the centre of the home defence, but goalkeeper Colm McAdden was alert to the situation and denied him getting a shot away.

After the break, the home side dominated a lot more and a lovely ball down the right wing found Sam Smart and he left defender Jamie Miller for dead crossing the ball to Argent, but his tame shot was saved.

On the hour mark, Town made it 2-0. Smart beat Kieran Gardner and was able to get to the byline and his cross was headed home by Argent.

Soon after, Llantwit’s Mark Evans had a shot blocked on the edge of the area, as the visitors started to threaten more.

With 10 minutes left, Town’s George Bennett saw his strike from distance crash off the crossbar and then birthday boy Jordan Goater’s effort was caught by the visiting goalkeeper.

Town wrapped up the game’s scoring in the 90th minute, as Jack McKnight’s corner was headed on by Callum Bunting and Charlie Kennedy smashed the ball into the roof of the net.

After the game Town manager Jason Bristow said: “I think overall in pre-season we have equipped ourselves very well and today we have scored a few goals and kept a clean sheet.

“They posed us problems early on and are a good side, so it made the manner in which we won really pleasing.”

Next for Town is their league opener away at Walton Casuals on Saturday.
