JAMES Vince's chances of playing his first one-day international for nearly two years have been boosted with England opener Jason Roy a major doubt for the series decider against India at Headingley.

The 27-year-old is struggling with an injury to the little finger on his right hand.

Roy has scored 78 runs across the opening two ODIs, with Joe Root, a centurion at Lord’s, the only Englishman to have scored more.

England are hoping the winner-takes-all scenario they are faced with in Leeds will stand them in good stead for next summer’s 50-over World Cup on home soil. Roy's injury comes a day after Vince was called up to replace Dawid Malan, who is playing for the England Lions.

It would be Vince’s first one-day international on home soil, his first five having been in Dublin, Cardiff and Bangladesh.

He made 51 in his maiden ODI innings as England beat Sri Lanka at the Swalec Stadium two years ago.

But he has not played in the 50-over format since making scores of 16, 5 and 32 in a 2-1 series win in Bangladesh in October 2016.

Vince won the last of his 13 Test and seven T20 caps in New Zealand earlier this year.
