BASINGSTOKE Town signed off their season with a thrilling 4-3 victory over visiting King’s Langley.

Before the game’s kick-off the club made a number of presentations with Guri Dumuria winning the John Turner Shield for the Most Improved Player.

Charlie Kennedy was the Away Player of the Season and Sam Smart won the Player of the Season award.

Terry Brown in his final game in charge before taking on the role of Director of Football at the club, made three changes to the side which drew at St Ives, with Colm McAdden, Smart and Dan Collier all returning to the starting line-up in place of Kaine McAuley, George McGuiness and Jack Martin.

The home side dominated the first 45 minutes and should have led by more than 2-0 at the break.

They opened their account after eight minutes after a disputed throw-in, saw Sam Deadfield find Jack McKnight and he volleyed on the turn and into the roof of the net.

Soon after, a great strike from Deadfield saw Martin Bennett push his curling effort wide.

Dan Bayliss fired just wide of the post and then defender Callum Adebiyi denied Callum Bunting.

However, Town did get their second as a nice ball through by Dan Collier saw the visiting goalkeeper come flying out of his box, but he missed the ball and leading scorer Bunting from wide on the right, was able to slot the ball into the empty net.

Half-time saw what departing boss Brown described as his worst ever team talk as the visitors having not looking capable of scoring one goal, preceded to net three to take the lead.

Their first arrived on 52 minutes, as once again the Dragons were undone by a corner which Jorell Johnson headed home.

Just six minutes later and the visitors were level, after Mitchell Weiss scored with an individual strike.

Just after the hour mark, Town’s George Bennett forced a good save out of his name sake in the King’s Langley goal.

The visitors then took the lead on 75 minutes as Kieran Turner was able to muscle his way into the box on the left and his shot cum cross hit the far post on its way into the net.

Most teams at this point would have given up, but not the Dragons.

With nine minutes to go, a nice ball from George Bennett found Deadfield and he levelled things up, with a nice finish.

In a grandstand finish the visitor’s Eduard Toiny-Pendred fired over and then with four minutes left, Town grabbed their winner.

Smart was able to fly down the right wing and his cross was met by Bunting.

Michael Bennett made a great stop, but the rebound fell to McKnight to crash home his second of the game and make sure the Dragons signed off their season with a 4-3 win.

The victory made sure of an excellent 10th place.

After the game Brown said: “We dominated the first half and then gave away three disappointing goals, but it was great to see the boys just move up a gear and win the game.

“Our form in the second half of the season would have seen us in the play-offs. So there is a lot to build on if we can keep most of this side together.”

On Thursday night, Town drew 2-2 at St Ives.

Bunting gave them a first half lead and Bennett made it 2-0. Dubi Ogbonna scored twice to ensure a share of the points.
