BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club Men's first team ended joint league leaders Woking's unbeaten start to the campaign with a 3-2 victory.

The game started at a high tempo, with the visitors striking first via a fast flicked penalty corner, awarded after the Woking attack broke through Basingstoke press to force some last ditch defending.

However, Basingstoke quickly equalised with Todd Hutchinson leaping on a Josh Weir cross.

Basingstoke applied more directed pressure in the second half and a flick from Graham Garrett-Lang rippled the side netting to the goalkeeper's right, put the home side ahead.

Josh Weir then popped up in the D to find the back of the net with a reverse stick shot after some determined running from Will Jewkes. Woking responded and pressed hard to regain some control and despite a committed save from the keeper Adam’s Smith helmet, Woking blasted the ball home from close range.

Woking were hunting a equaliser in the final quarter, however Basingstoke held firm to take the game 3-2.

The seconds travelled to Gosport and reached double figures in their highest scoring game so far finishing 10-2 winners.

Basingstoke moved the ball around the Gosport defence well and controlled the game from start to finish, tucking home many of their opportunities.

Phil Stewart netted five with Dan Holding supplying two, and Liam Harrison, Ben Jubin and Alex Miller taking away one apiece.

The thirds took on Blandford and Sturminster Newton, losing 3-2, with Jez Smith scoring both.

The fourths refreshed from a week off beat Camberley and Farnborough 5-1, with two goals from Kyle McFee and one each for Harry Spicer, Jacques Lourens and Chris Jenkins.

The fifths won away 4-3 at Petersfield in a close fought match with a hat-trick from Jake Wilcox and a single from Adam Cramer.

The Vikings had the early pushback against Aldershot and Farnham Six, losing 2-1 despite a Karl Neighbour strike early on.

The Ladies second team welcomed Haslemere to Down Grange, always a tough opposition.

Basingstoke started the game with excellent intensity and soaked up the pressure from Haslemere’s high press.

They found a way through to Cath McCormick in the D, who, one on one with the goalkeeper slotted the ball home to go ahead.

Basingstoke doubled their lead via a penalty corner, Sarah Shearing injecting to Sarah Mainprise to strike home.

Haslemere pulled a goal back early in the second half, overloading the Basingstoke defence.

Revitalised from scoring, Haslemere scored an equaliser with 10 minutes, so the final score was 2-2 and Basingstoke remain second in Hampshire’s First Division.

The thirds got their game against Haslemere off to a strong start, however could not score early, and the opposition soon woke up and forced some cracking saves from Nicky Ball and dogged defending from Millie Crass and Jo Armson to keep the sheet clean.

A breakaway move from Basingstoke gave Katie Smith the goal to go ahead before the break.

Basingstoke tiring, Haslemere owned the second half, and equalised from a penalty corner, but the Basingstoke back-line kept them out, to finish 1-1 for a point.

The fourths hosted Fareham and whilst Fareham piled the pressure on Basingstoke, the game remained deadlock with Basingstoke squandering their chances.

In the final ten minutes, after a long game of defending for Basingstoke, Fareham slipped through and managed to score, final score 1-0 to Fareham.

The sixths travelled to Portsmouth and Southsea for their first ever win, 3-0.

Dominating the first half Basingstoke could not convert their numerous opportunities, with Claire Keeley hitting the post and Jasmine Payne just shooting wide.

The second half saw Jasmine Payne score her first goal for the club, Claire Keeley finding the net and Ella Montagnon who scored the third to secure the game.

The Ladies Masters took on local rivals Reading, winning 3-0 to remain unbeaten.

Basingstoke started brightly and it wasn't long before Tania Bridge opened her account.

Despite plenty of possession and opportunities it wasn’t until the second half when Jenny Rust struck home from short range a Di Taylor cross. One more goal came when Debbie Ridger was deprived an opportunity to score off a Jenny Rust cross by a defenders foot deflecting it into their own goal.

The under-14 boys played a friendly match against Winchester. With a depleted side they borrowed some from Winchester but sadly lost 7-1.
