JOSH Smith bagged his first Basingstoke Bison goals and also scored the winning penalty shot, as the Herd won in Bracknell 5-4.

After 60 minutes and overtime failed to split the teams, the game went to penalty shots, with the former Bee grabbing the winner.

The shoot-out started with both Callum Best and Tomas Karpov unable to score.

Shaun Thompson gave Bracknell the lead and then Smith and Frankie Bakrlik failed to hit the net. It was left to Roman Malinik to send the shoot-out into sudden death.

With the Herd now going first, Smith scored as did Jan Bendik.

Karpov's effort was then saved and Thompson missed, before Smith put the Bison ahead again.

It was now left to Bendik to keep the shoot-out going, but he could not beat Dean Skinns.

Earlier in the contest, the Bison raced into a 2-0 lead, as Ryan Sutton and Dan Scott scored.

The Bees hit back from Bakrlik and Jarad Lane to tie things by the first break.

Bakrlik then put the home side ahead, but Smith's first Bison goal made it 3-3 at the second buzzer.

Thompson once again put Bracknell ahead, but a minute later Smith levelled things.

With no further goals in the rest of the period and overtime, the game was decided by a shoot-out with the Smith getting the winner.

The Herd return to league action on Sunday (6.45pm) with a trip to Streatham.
