THE next family chess morning will be held on Saturday October 21 at the Discovery Centre/ Library in the town centre.

This popular free event is organised by the Basingstoke Chess Club.

With growing membership the club has entered six teams into the area chess leagues.

The club have had mixed fortunes to start the season from three very difficult away matches.

In the Berkshire League (Premier Precision Cup) they lost out to a very strong Crowthorne A side by 4-2.

Basingstoke points came via a David Graham win and draws from Steven Jones and Jamie Chilton.

The club also made an early exit from the Southampton League (Robertson Cup) at Salisbury losing 3½ - 1½ .

The highlight for the Sherborne Road club was a win by Graham Phillips in his first match against a very much higher graded opponent.

However, the club recorded a win in the Borders League at Camberley B by 3-2. Basingstoke’s points came via wins from Ivan Stipcevic and Liam Blanc plus draws from David Graham and Jamie Chilton.

The summer tourney group winners were Liam Blanc, Philip Ware, Mo Negargar and Philip May.

The Juniors section produced an all girl final with Yasmin Phillips edging out Aheng Negargar by 1½ to ½ Basingstoke Junior player Daniel Yu moved up a few age groups in the very strong Horris Hill Junior Chess Congress and finished joint first.
