THREE members of Su-Ha-Ri Karate School all won medals at the United Styles Association Open (USA Open) Championships in Dudley.

Costello School pupil Sibi Kumara contested the boys 14 to 15’s kumite (fighting) category.

In what would have made a great final, Kumara was unlucky to face the eventual winner in the first round, this denied him a chance of a medal.

Harry Beveridge, fared a little better in the boys 10 to 11’s category.

He won his first three fights to take him to the final.

Although relatively new to competitions, he fought well to take the silver.

Tadley’s Lucas Spiers was out for revenge in the boys 12 to 13 age group.

At the previous USA Open he had been narrowly beaten, after an unlucky decision against William Smith, one of England’s top ranked fighters.

He boldly proclaimed beforehand: “If I get a chance to fight Will, then I am going to beat him.”

After three rounds he faced Smith in the semi-finals. He took the lead with a punch and led for rest of the fight to take the win.

Already buzzing over his victory against Smith, Spiers added to his elation, by taking gold in the final.

Spiers then joined Kumara in the 14 to 15 age group three-man team event. Despite only being two of them and forfeiting a fight, they fought well earning to win a bronze medal.

Coach Kevin Crine said: “To go to a competition without a coach is difficult.

“So they showed great maturity to step up to this challenge. Also, for a team of three to beat six large clubs is very impressive.”
