NEW ZEALANDERS Henry Collier and Scott Baldwin steered Hartley Wintney to an impressive 199-run home victory, over Southern League Division Two promotion rivals Sparsholt.

Opening batsman Collier scored his maiden league century for the village side with an awesome 146.

Baldwin, then proved to be just as impressive with the ball, taking a magnificent seven wickets, including two double wicket maiden overs.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for Hartley and keeps them hot on the heels of the top two ahead of next weekend’s trip to St Cross II.

Against fellow Winchester side, Sparsholt, home skipper Danny Plume won the toss and elected to bat.

It proved to be the right move, despite the early loss of Will Kerr (17) with 18 on the scoreboard.

This brought captain Plume to the centre, and along with Collier they set about building a platform for victory.

The pair added 150 to help Hartley to 168 after 30 overs, before Plume was the second wicket for David Banks (2-34).

Scott Baldwin (12) and Collier took the score to 198, before Baldwin was dismissed.

The score then moved past 200, thanks to Jamie Teale (15) and Collier, before Teale became Nick Doubell’s third wicket.

Mike Doubell then removed Will Ross leaving the home side reaching 214-6.

Into the final seven overs of the innings, Collier and Rhys Batcup kept the runs coming as they added 61 for the seventh wicket, before Dan Weir ended Collier's superb knock, which included nine fours and six sixes.

Batcup finished unbeaten on 29, as Hartley recorded 296-8 from their 50 overs.

This proved to be far too many runs for the visitors, who were soon in trouble as Ollie Waddington (2-23) trapped opener David Banks leg before for two.

The visitors hit back, thanks to Jeremy Frith (21) and Sam Kennett (11), but then Waddington had Kennett dismissed leg before.

Baldwin (7-18) then took over, as he had Frith caught behind by Will Ross and Chris Mitchell (4) was dismissed leaving Sparsholt 65-4.

Batcup then struck in his first over as he bowled Nick Doubell.

With only three runs added Dan Reynaldo produced a stunning one-handed catch to remove Andy Watts and two balls later Baldwin shattered Simon Attridge’s stumps as Sparsholt slumped to 74-7.

Jamie Skeoch (23) and Dan Weir added 12 runs for the eighth wicket, before Skeoch was caught by Waddington for Baldwin’s fifth wicket.

Without a run being added, the bowler claimed his sixth scalp, with Mike Doubell being bowled.

Weir (4 not out) and last man Mark Stone, so nearly got the score into double figures, but Stone went leg before to Baldwin as the visitors were bowled out for 97.

This afternoon, Hartley are in T20 Cup action at OTs and Romsey.
