ODIHAM hockey star Alex Danson glittering career was even more special last week, as she become England captain for the summer and also scored her 100th international goal .

Danson was named captain ahead of a two game series on home soil against Argentina and the Netherlands and is one of England and Great Britain’s greatest ever hockey players scoring 100 goals in 274 caps, having made her international debut aged just 16.

The 32-year-old forward will also captain England in July’s Hockey World League in South Africa, then August’s EuroHockey Championships when England go to Holland as defending champions.

He first game as skipper proved to be a baptised of fire for the new captain as they lost 5-1 to very strong.

Then 24 hours later at the same London venue Danson scored her 100th goal as she started her side’s comeback as England came back from 2-0 down to level things, forcing the game into penalty flicks which England unfortunately lost 4-3.

Danson said: “It is always special to play for your country, but even more so to lead out your team at home with such great support. Argentina were very good, but we showed our character as a team to comeback against Holland.

“There was a lot of talk before the weekend that I needed one goal to get to 100 and I thought this had cursed it, so I was delighted to score. It also made it extra as my family were at the games so they could enjoy it as well.”
