BASINGSTOKE and Deane celebrated a hat-trick of success at the Energise Me Hampshire Sports Awards at Southampton’s St Mary’s Stadium.

Basingstoke Hockey Club won the Club of the Year, Doug Sheppard collected the Coach of Year trophy and Anne Flitcroft took the honours picking up the Official of the Year award.

For the sixth consecutive year Kris Temple from BBC South Today presented the evening, with special guest BBC Sports Personality of the Year Helen Rollason Award 2016 winner, Ben Smith.

The hockey club faced tough competition with Chineham Running Club, who won the Basingstoke Club of the Year award and Hampshire Sitting Volleyball Club also nominated.

The hockey club were the winners though, the award being won for their focus on being a family-oriented club, youth development, and the ladies first and thirds and men’s seconds, fourths and fifths achieving promotion last season.

Last season’s chairman, Miranda Smith said: “It’s incredible because this represents a real club effort as we are a dedicated group of volunteers who give up time and effort.

“Thank you to everyone involved for your hard work in making the club run smoothly.”

Current vice-chairman, Ruth Crawford added: “To be the best community club in Hampshire was our mission but we have done this sooner than we expected and still have more to do.

“We want to continue to develop and get sponsors for our second pitch, which we’re hoping to get in place ready for 2018-19 season.

“We would like to thank Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for their support.”

Basingstoke Bison head coach Sheppard also missed out on Basingstoke award, but took the Coach of the Year crown in Southampton, as he beat off competition from sailing coach Mark Rushall and swimming guru Kim Hill.

The Canadian guided the Herd to their first league crown in 23 years last season and in his five year reign at the club the team have never finished outside the top three in the English Premier League, which is why he is the most successful coach in the club’s history.

Sheppard said: “It is always nice for the club to be recognised and this award is as much for the players for what they achieved.”

Basingstoke and Mid Hants official Flitcroft from South View, completed a town and county double by winning the Official of Year award, as she beat off competition from Eastleigh’s Colin Miles and Lia Waine from the New Forest.

The highlight of last summer for the 18-year-old Queen Mary’s College student was being Hampshire’s Young Official at the English School Track and Field Championships in Gateshead and working with many of the countries top officials.

She also had the opportunity to practise her international officiating skills at the European IAUM in Cambridge in August.

Flitcroft said: I was delighted to have made the shortlist for the county awards, but to be the winner did come as a bit of a surprise.”

The official has another bust summer ahead of her and is looking forward to being at the Para Athletics World Championship in July and then the IAAF World Championships a month later.
