BASINGSTOKE Hockey Ladies secured back to back league titles as they won 4-1 at Havant.

The ladies travelled to Havant, knowing a win would secure they win the league with a game to spare.

Havant were close to the bottom of the league and likely to put up a fight to ensure they avoid relegation.

The game was fast and open in the first half, and Basingstoke scored first, Mel Trevaskis driving round the back and pulling the ball back for Fi Parker to strike first time into the corner.

Havant then equalised, but the visitors scored again just before half time when Roxy O’Dea sent a quick long corner to Jo Bowden who found Steph Hazell at pivot.

She drew the defence and slipped the ball back to O’Dea who eliminated the defence and lifted it over the diving goalkeeper to go into half time 2-1 up.

Basingstoke scored early in the second half through a penalty corner, playing the ball back to the back post for captain Catriona Bausor to convert.

Annalise Whitehead got the final goal, dispossessing a Havant defender and slotting home the rebound following a saved first shot.

It was a very professional performance from the team, who are excited about the challenge of South Division One next season.

Coach Lisa Scarborough said: "Once again, the strength in depth of the ladies 1st team squad and work rate and fitness of all players meant Havant couldn’t match the sustained intensity and pressure put on them by Basingstoke.

"I’m an incredibly proud coach, the team have been a joy to work with and they fully deserve the achievement of back to back league wins."

The ladies third team climbed out of the relegation zone with a 2-0 win over fellow relegation contenders Winchester.

The game was evenly matched with both teams putting pressure on the opposition’s defence however Basingstoke broke the deadlock when Caitlin Palmer played the ball to Tania Bridge in the circle to calmly slot home into the corner.

Winchester won three penalty corners before half time, but the defence and Basingstoke goalkeeper Gemma Allen stood strong.

In the second half, Basingstoke scored early on to calm the nerves, Hannah Watt making a driving run into the circle, her wide-bound shot finding Bridge to divert into the goal.

With two games to go, the thirds are in a good position to ensure they remain in Hampshire Division Two next season.

The fourths are still on course for promotion despite a second defeat in a row, losing 2-1 away at Fleet and Ewshot, the goal coming from Sophie Slemeck.

The fifths continued their late season excellent form with a 1-1 draw away at Gosport, Philipa Spicer scoring.

The second team lost 4-2 away at Havant. The ladies were 3-0 down, before a penalty corner conversions from Sarah Mainprise-Tait and Sarah Shearing, but their comeback was short lived when Havant scored again to secure the points.

In the men’s section, the first team beat visiting Woking 4-2.

Basingstoke took the lead as Dan Bowden drove the baseline and slotted home. Woking equalised just before half time.

Basingstoke took the lead early in the second half, Grant Rouse picking the ball up at the top of the circle and took it on his reverse past the goalkeeper.

They soon increased their lead when the forwards linked up well, Rouse playing in Dean Record who drew the goalkeeper and slipped to Todd Hutcheson to score.

Woking pulled a goal back but Basingstoke made sure of the points when Record finished from a tight angle on his reverse.

The seconds travelled to Isle of Wight with a depleted team and lost 7-2, the thirds went to Trojans and lost 7-1.

The fourth team lost 5-2 away at Haslemere and the Vikings went down 6-0 at Salisbury.

It was better news for the fifth team as won at home to Camberley 1-0, the goal coming when Dave Cramer found Ryan Casson on the right, who crossed for Chris Jenkins to slide in and convert.
