THE officers of the Basingstoke Chess Club were scanning the records of the West of England Junior Chess Championships.
There have been odd success stories for the Basingstoke Junior Chess Club over the years, the most recent by England Schools international Alex Vanlint around four years ago.
However, at the recent championships held in Swindon two of the club juniors became the West of England champions on the same weekend.
First up was Daniel Yu of Daneshill School who won the under 10 title ahead of a large and strong field.
Then the news came that Daniel Shek of Yateley Manor School picked up the under-eight title, once again ahead of a strong field.
Things got even better for the Juniors when nine year old Daniel Dewdney of Bramley School, became the Basingstoke Cubs under-11 champion will progress to the Regional Finals.
