OVERTON Whites under-12s won a thrilling penalty shoot-out over the Basingstoke Town Colts Lions, to book their place in the final of the Peter Houseman League Cup.

They will now meet the Thatcham Tornadoes Amber for the trophy at Longmeadow on April 2 (10.30pm).

The cup win avenged a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the Lions and they found themselves 1-0 down to the visitors to Berrydown.

A great team talk at half-time from the coaching team of Richard Whiting and Nick Rowland soon paid dividends.

Within 10 minutes of the restart, midfielder and top scorer Jasper Rowland moved into double figures for the season, when he nutmegged a Basingstoke defender and curled a sweet shot past the goalkeeper from outside the 18 yard box to level the scores.

This set-up a pulsating final 20 minutes, Overton dominated for long periods, but Basingstoke were dangerous on the break.

Some tireless running from Harvey Cook and Jimmy Sherlock helped create a number of chances for Overton and in the closing minutes Arthur Sefton struck the bar with a powerful effort. Seconds later and with the very last incident of an exciting game the Basingstoke goalkeeper somehow prevented Sefton from bundling the ball across the line.

So the final place from decided by penalties and after the first five for each team it was still level at 3-3, as Overton goalkeeper Jack Murdoch pulled off some heroic saves, as did the Basingstoke goalie.

It was left to Sefton to score the winner, as Overton won the shoot-out 8-7.
