Hampshire captain James Vince’s adventures in Australia’s KFC Big Bash League are over.
His Sydney Thunder franchise, which won the competition last winter, suffered an emphatic 77- run defeat in their final ‘must win’ qualifying match against the Adelaide Strikers at a sell out Olympic Stadium.
Opening the batting, Vince was spectacularly caught behind second ball for two – having watched Adelaide pile up 178-5. Thunder managed 101 all out in reply, writes Mike Vimpany.
Ben Dunk (65), Brad Hodge (39) and then Kieron Pollard, with a blistering 47 off 22 deliveries with five huge sixes, ran amok.
Former Hampshire all-rounder Shane Watson (39) was the only Thunder batsman to make his mark as New Zealander Ish Sodhi, bowling leg breaks, produced a competition best 6-11 to skittle the Sydney team for 101.
