BASINGSTOKE Town finally secured their first win of 2017 with a 2-0 victory at Cambridge City.

It also meant Town completed their first league double of the season, having beaten City 2-1 at home earlier in the campaign.

Manager Terry Brown was forced to reshuffle his line-up being without Nana Owusu and Matt Partridge, so Aaron Redford and Ashleigh Antwell came in from the side which lost at Kettering last weekend.

After the sides swapped early chances, Town took the lead after 15 minutes as Marcus Johnson-Schuster won a free-kick.

Midfielder Sam Deadfield sent in a lovely ball to the far post which captain David Ray was on hand to head home for the lead.

Soon after, striker Aaron Redford fired over from 25-yards out and then Michael Atkinson saw his shot tipped over by City goalkeeper Enoi Ordonez.

A poor back pass nearly allowed the home side in, but Alex Tokacyzk made a superb one handed save from Leyton Orient loanee Tristan Abrahams.

On 41 minutes, the visitors doubled their advantage as Atkinson showed some great skill out on the left and his cross was converted by Redford.

The Dragons so nearly made it three before the break, but Charlie Kennedy’s shot was blocked.

After the interval, Town continued to have chances and then the home side tried to get themselves back into the contest.

Tokaczyk produced a brilliant double stop to deny Ollie Snaith on his debut.

Then City’s big centre half Jordan Gent headed just wide from a corner.

The visitors then made a couple of changes with Dan Collier coming on for Artwell and Kennedy being forced off due to injury and replaced by Mark Hastings.

As the match came to a close Deadfield nearly scored direct from a corner, as the home goalie just managed to push the ball away.

The midfielder then also went close with a free-kick a minute into added on time, as Town had to settle for a 2-0 victory which moved them up to 15th in the Southern League Premier Division table.

The Dragons now take a break from league action, as on Tuesday night they entertain AFC Stoneham in a Hampshire Senior Cup quarter-final tie.

The Wessex League Division One visitors have won nine of their last 10 games and enjoyed a 6-1 league thrashing of Fleet Spurs as their warm-up for their trip to Basingstoke.
