HOOK and Newnham Basics moved back to the top of the Southern League Division One, after leaders Sarisbury Athletic lost to Liphook and they beat Totton and Eling.

Visiting Totton decided to bat and soon wished they had not, as Charlie Cummings was bowled second ball by Shane Brewer (3-41).

Fellow opener Tom Rouse, only lasted a little bit longer, as he was caught behind by Josh Buckingham, which gave Brewer his second wicket of the contest.

Brewer struck again as he trapped Kumodak Sharma (11) leg before to leave Totton on 18-3.

First change bowler Kieran Thomson (1-28) accounted for Jon Lowe (4), before Totton thanks to Mark Moofana (41) and Christopher Thomason (71) got their innings back on track.

They added 55 for the fifth wicket, before Moofana was caught by Harry Warner which gave Anik Divecha a deserved wicket, for a really mean spell of bowling which yielded just 16 runs from 10 overs.

Khajit Sharma departed next ball as Buckingham snapped up another catch behind the stumps, which gave Kevin Poulter (2-25) his first wicket.

Richard Dibben (19) along with Thomson took the score to 114 before Dibben was bowled by Poulter.

Thomason then took up the mantle in the final overs, before his excellent 110 ball innings, which included nine fours, came to end as Matt Love took a catch off the bowling of Ben Thane.

The visitors added two runs after this as they were all out for 186.

A superb century from Thane steered Hook home with nine overs to spare, despite the early loss of Jordan Hobday (1) with 16 on the board.

Thane’s unbeaten 108 not out came from 123 balls and saw him hit 17 fours.

Along with Harry Warner (23) he added 95 for the second wicket.

It was then left to Thane and Love (35) to bring the side home for an eight wicket win.

Hook have the little matter of the Finch Group Guy Jewell Cup final this afternoon (3pm), before they can focus on their final league game at home to Basingstoke and North Hants.

Hook lead Sarisbury by two points going into the final game of the season, and the south coast side are on their travels next weekend to in-form Bournemouth.
