HOOK and Newnham Basics' run in the T20 Cup was ended at quarter-final stage as they were beaten at Premier Division big guns South Wilts Lions by nine wickets.

The visitors must have regretted their decision to bat first, when they found themselves two wickets down without a run on the board as both Ben Thane and Kieran Thomson were dismissed for ducks.

It got no better as by the eighth over they had struggled to 32-7, but a determined partnership for the eighth wicket between Richard Wilcock 41 not out (43-ball, eight fours) and Shane Brewer 26 saw them add 61, before Brewer was stumped. Tom Pearce (3-27) and Luke Evans (3-30) led the South Wilts bowling attack as Hook finished on 117-8 from their 20 overs.

From then on it was the Jake Winter show as the opener hit a quickfire 83 not out from just 32 balls to lead the Lions to victory with 57 balls to spare.

Winter's knock included 10 fours and five sixes, with his biggest hit sailing over the pavilion roof, a feat previously only achieved by Yasir Arafat for Lashings and this only clipped the edge of the roof.

The man out for the home side was James Hayward (19) trapped leg before by Rhodes Franklin and by then they had reached 66 off the first six overs.
