Somerset fast bowler Jamie Overton’s five-wicket haul sparked an extraordinary collapse by Hampshire – who were bowled out for 219.
The home side werew 184-3 but lost six wickets for 11 runs with Overton the chief tormentor as he ended with figures of five for 42.
Overton started his streak when Michael Carberry (29) was well caught at mid-wicket, before Sean Ervine was caught behind and Lewis McManus comprehensively castled second ball, both for ducks.
He completed his five-for by trapping Gareth Berg (0) and Mason Crane (1) lbw.
Jamie's twin brother Craig - who had dismissed openers Jimmy Adams (61), who was brilliantly caught in the slips by Marcus Trescothick, and Will Smith (32) - picked up the final wicket when Tino Best slogged to mid-on.
Earlier in the session, Jim Allenby saw off Tom Alsop and Liam Dawson.
Hampshire lost nine wickets in the session and collapsed from 166 for two to 219 all out.
Ryan Mclaren struck early with Somerset captain Chris Rogers caught behind first ball, but Trescothick and former Hampshire batsman Johann Myburgh guided the visitors to 66-1 before bad light intervened.
