BASINGSTOKE Town finished their National League South home campaign with an excellent 2-0 victory over Truro City.

The win delighted Dragons boss Terry Brown, who said: “The players were determined to go out on a high and they did.

“Last week we defended magnificently at Dartford, who are trying to make the play-offs and then today we have beaten play-off certainties Truro.”

During the week, the Dragons announced next season, they would be going full time with a much younger squad.

So this meant many of the players were playing in their last game at the Camrose in Basingstoke colours.

Brown acknowledged this and said: “Today was for the senior players and I am really pleased we won for them.”

Looking to next season, Brown gave debuts in the starting line-up to Basingstoke Academy player Aaron Jarvis, while team mate George Bennett came off the bench for his debut.

A third Town Academy player George Hallahan was also given his first league start of the season, while the only other change was that Aaron Howe was back in goal.

Town took just six minutes to take the lead in the game, as youngsters Jarvis and Hallahan combined, for Simon Dunn to score with a sweet strike from inside the penalty area.

With the home side prepared to sit deep, Truro were able to run the midfield and had a number of corners with one seeing a mishit header go across the face of the goal, while another saw Jamie Richards’ shot go over the bar.

As the first half came to a close good pressure by Jarvis forced Truro to concede a throw-in, deep in their own half and from this Hallahan fired just wide.

After the interval, Truro tried to press, but the home defence held firm and just after the hour mark Rice fed newly crowned Player of the Year Louie Soares and his deflection shot went just wide.

Soon after, a nice lay back to Dan Green saw his shot blocked by David Ray and then Town sub Liam Enver-Marum charged into the box and the Truro goalie did well to save with his legs.

With eight minutes left on the clock, the visiting players appealed for a handball in the penalty area against Town skipper Ray, but nothing was given.

Ray was then in the wars with a clash of heads, which saw him need treatment for a cut.

He ended the game with a bandage around his head and in a different shirt, because of the blood on his first one.

This added on a number of minutes to the game and in the seventh one of these, George Bennett played the ball through to fellow sub Manny Williams.

The striker hesitated waiting for an off side flag, which never came. So he was able to chip the out rushing goalie and his shot hit the inside of the post on its way into the net to make sure of the victory.

Already relegated Town conclude their National League South campaign away at Chelmsford City on Saturday.
