CLOSE: Yorkshire 593-9dec & 183-8dec; Hampshire 453-9dec

Hampshire’s injury crisis worsened when Fidel Edwards was injured before the final day of the drawn Specsavers County Championship match against Yorkshire at Headingley.

Already without Reece Topley (fractured hand), Gareth Berg (knee) and Ryan Stevenson (back), Hampshire suffered further injuries to Liam Dawson (abdominal strain) and Chris Wood (knee) as Yorkshire amassed 593-9 declared.

Wood was able to take the new ball yesterday morning after being dismissed for 31.

But the day after Sean Ervine damaged the left index finger he fractured last season, while making a potentially match-saving 123, Edwards had to be carried off after twisting an ankle during the fourth day warm-up.

Jimmy Adams should be back for the next match against Middlesex on May 1, following an ankle injury.

But Ervine will have an X-ray today on his left index digit, while Edwards' right ankle is assessed in Leeds.

Hampshire’s week off could not be better timed. Director of cricket Giles White and head coach Dale Benkenstein will no doubt spend it exploring the possibility of a new signing but Brad Wheal and spin twins Mason Crane and Brad Taylor provide options.

With Edwards injured, Hampshire declared when, having added three to their overnight 450-8, they lost Wood to Ryan Sidebottom in the sixth over of the final day.

Even with most of their first-choice attack injured, Hampshire were outstanding with the ball.

Buoyed by their stirring fightback with the bat, and with Benkenstein, video analyst Joe Maiden and 12th man Mason Crane on as sub fielders, James Tomlinson trapped Alex Lees lbw with the fourth ball of Yorkshire’s second innings.

Veteran left-armer Tomlinson claimed the second wicket of his excellent opening spell (7-2-9-2) when former England batsman Gary Ballance drove straight to Tom Alsop at short cover, having made four from 36 balls.

Adam Lyth somehow managed to edge Ryan McLaren’s second ball, a wide delivery that was swinging away from the left-hander, to a diving Adam Wheater.

Yorkshire were 43-4 when a superb, rising ball from McLaren caught the edge of Jonny Bairstow’s bat.

Wheater took another catch to see off the first-innings double centurion for just five.

A positive result was still possible at lunch, when Yorkshire were 67-4, but runs and wickets did not come quickly enough on what was still a very good wicket.

Hampshire bowling:  Tomlinson 16-7-31-3, Wood 16-8-21-1, Vince 10-1-43-1, McLaren 10-2-26-2, Smith 16.3-5-41-1
