BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club Ladies booked a home tie with Winchester in the quarter-finals of the Hampshire Cup thanks to a 3-0 win over Andover.

The away goalkeeper and some good defending thwarted numerous Basingstoke attempts, until eventually a short corner was swept home at the far post, by Ruth Crawford for 1-0 at half time.

Andover started the second half the better with home goalkeeper Gemma Carswell called into action, but Basingstoke soon steadied the ship and consistent pressure paid off with a superbly taken goal.

Catriona Bausor’s run and pull back was touched on by Claire Bowman leaving Fiona Parker to smash the ball.

The third goal followed soon after, as 16-year-old most valuable player Rachel Bomphrey beat the last defender and sitting the goalkeeper on the floor calmly fired into the net.

The previous day the ladies kept up their recent good league form, but left it late to beat a well-drilled Guildford side 2-0 at Down Grange.

It was not until a hammered ball from captain Catriona Bausor found Bowman in the circle and despite the attentions of defender and goalkeeper.

Bowman smashed a reverse stick drive into the corner, on the turn, for the opener inside the last 10 minutes.

Fiona Parker was then fouled when looking to get a shot away and most valuable player Bowman stepped up to dispatch the penalty flick. This sets up a six-pointer against leaders East Grinstead.

The men’s first team were next on the pitch and served up a 5-0 win against Southampton Uni.

David Stones grabbed a hat trick, Todd Hutcheson got his first for the club and Grant Rouse supplied the other. The result keeps them four points behind leaders Bournemouth and four ahead of Epsom, with eight games to play.

The seconds kept up their unbeaten table-topping form with a dominant 6-1 win away to Havant, despite their goalkeeper getting lost en-route and making the game with minutes to spare.

Seasoned front-man Ben Shaughnessy scored four and up-and-coming 16-year-old Josh Weir got two.

Veteran Alex Miller was man of the match and the win leaves them eight points clear with a vastly superior goal difference than second placed Petersfield. The boys welcome third placed Fareham to Down Grange on Saturday.

The men’s third team were disappointed with a 2-2 draw against Chichester, having led until the final minutes, The fourth team went down 5-1 to second-placed Southampton, and the Vikings lost 8-2 to Petersfield.

There was better news from the men’s fifth (development) team who moved up to third after a 5-0 win over City of Portsmouth.

Elsewhere for the ladies, the second team lost out 1-0 to a late penalty flick at Southampton, and the third team went down 2-0 against Aldershot and Farnham.

The fourth team took a point from second-placed Petersfield, Camilla Brett-Smith and 'keeper Lily Lawson involved in some last ditch defending before Petersfield took a 1-0 lead towards half time.

They doubled their lead in the second period, but Basingstoke hit back from Sharon Holden's short corner. Michelle Rounding scored a superb breakaway goal to equalise and though the momentum remained with Basingstoke the scoreline ended 2-2.

The fifth team provided good news late in the day at Down Grange with a 3-0 win over Southampton University, First team goalkeeper-turned-striker Gemma Carswell bagging a goal followed by Clare Keeley and Hayley Rouse.
