KELSEY Mosquera and Luke Watts were both double winners at the Basingstoke and District Tennis League Championships, writes RICHARD MOLE.

The Waverley pair won their respective singles titles before teaming up to win the mixed doubles crown, beating the Totally Tennis team of Tim Rice and Emma Barnes in the final.

The doubles match saw Watts hold his serve in the opening game as did Rice in the second game, but the power and placement of shots by the defending champions saw Mosquera and Watts win the first set 6-1.

The second set again saw the champions get off to the better start, taking a 2-0 and 4-1 lead.

Rice and Barnes fought hard throughout and made their way back into the set by winning two of the next three games.

However, Watts and Mosquera proved too strong in the end and defended their title by taking the second set 6-3.

The men’s singles final was contested between Watts and Beechdown’s Chris Harrold.

Harrold was playing in the final as defending champion Malcolm McPhail had to withdraw due to injury.

Watts won the toss and decided to receive, with Harrold holding his serve and immediately breaking Watts in the second game.

The set then went with serve, with Harrold winning it 6-3. He built up a 3-0 lead in the second set before Watts levelled things and after a series of breaks the set was decided in a tie-break, which Watts won 11-9.

The final set started with a break of serve to Watts, with Harrold not being able to repeat the consistency and power of shot he had shown in the opening two sets.

With some very steady and clever play, Watts opened up a 3-0 lead on his way to taking the set 6-2 and the title for the first time.

Mosquera won the Ladies singles crown with a victory over her younger sister Jordan.

Jordan started brightly, breaking in the first game with some attacking ground strokes and returns of serve.

However, that was as good as it got for the younger sister as Kelsey won the title 6-1, 6-0.

The men’s doubles final saw Kingsclere’s defending champions Dan Cole and Chris Pearce take on Phil Dixon and James Chamberlin from Old Basing.

The first set saw breaks of serve from both teams, with Cole and Pearce eventually winning 6-4.

Cole and Pearce kept the pressure up in the second set, forcing errors out of their opponents and winning 6-4 to take the championship in straight sets.

The ladies doubles saw a rematch of last year’s final as defending champions, Beechdown’s Andrea Butcher and Clare Munns, took on Kelsey and Jordan Mosquera.

The Mosquera sisters got off to a flier in the first set, winning it 6-0.

However, the champions replied by winning the second set 6-0 and retained their title by taking the third set 6-2.
