BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s ladies team claimed an impressive 3-1 win over visiting Richmond.

Catriona Bausor put the hosts ahead early on, deflecting Claire Bowman’s shot past the Richmond goalkeeper, but the visitors soon found an equaliser.

Jo Bowden hit both the post and crossbar as Basingstoke searched for a second goal, but the hosts got the breakthrough when Annalise Whitehead’s shot was intentionally stopped on the line by the foot of a defender, with Bowman converting the resulting penalty stroke.

Kirsty Kent gave Basingstoke some breathing space in the second half, her deflected shot finding the net, and the hosts saw the game out comfortably to win.

The men’s first team were also victorious, winning 5-1 away at Barnes.

Grant Rouse opened the scoring after good play from Ben Jubin, with Jed Mills doubling the lead and Dean Record scoring twice to put the visitors in control at half-time.

Barnes pulled a goal back midway through the second period, but Graham Lang ended any hopes of a comeback by firing in Basingstoke’s fifth.

It was not such good news for the ladies second string, who created a host of chances but lost 3-0 at home to New Forest, conceding once in the first half and twice after the break.

The third team won 4-2 away at Southampton, with Leanne Smith converting Ellie Pearson’s cross to give them a slender half-time lead.

Smith netted again after the break, with Kirsty Brown and Nicky Dowds also finding the net to put the visitors in command. Southampton managed to score two late goals, but Basingstoke were never in any real danger of losing their lead.

The fourth team claimed a 1-1 draw with visiting IBM Nomads. They trailed at the break, but Sharon Holding converted Michelle Rounding’s long pass to secure a draw.

The fifth team won 2-1 away at Portsmouth, with Fiona Oxlade opening the scoring. The hosts levelled before half-time, but Claire Keeley grabbed a winner after the break.

The men’s second team won 5-0 at home against Poole. Ben Shaughnessy opened the scoring early on and Josh Weir increased the advantage in the second half. Shaughnessy completed his hat-trick with two more goals and William Jewkes added a fifth.
