JUSTIN Rose has an outside chance of winning the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup after finishing in a tie for 13th place at the BMW Championship.

The north Hampshire golfer ended the event, played at Conway Farms, in Illinois, at 11-under-par, well behind in-form Jason Day, who finished on -22.

Day's victory leaves him top of both the world and FedEx Cup rankings heading into this weekend's season-ending Tour Championship.

Rose's performance saw him secure his place in the 30-player final event, which will get under way at East Lake, in Georgia, on Thursday.

The former Robert May's School pupil sits 12th in the standings, which will now be reset to ensure that all 30 players in action have a chance of winning the $10million FedEx Cup jackpot.

However, Rose must win the event to have any hope of winning the title – and even that may not be enough if one of the players above him claim a high finish.

For example, if Day finishes in the top six, even a victory would not be enough to see Rose win overall.

The world number eight got off to a steady start at the BMW Championship, carding an opening round of 70 (-1) that included five birdies but also a double-bogey at the par-three 11th.

He moved up the standings with a second round of 64 (-7), making five birdies over the course of his last eight holes.

A mixed third round of 70 (-1) left Rose 15th heading into the final day. He was three-over-par after six holes, but birdied five of his last 12 holes to card 69 (-2) and move up two places to 13th.
