HOOK and Newnham Basics were unable to enjoy a double celebration at May’s Bounty on Sunday.

The club’s B team won the Cyril Thompson Plate, but the A team lost in the final of the Finch Group Guy Jewell Cup.

In the plate finale, Hook were 50-run victors over Oakley, but they lost to Rotherfield Park by five wickets in the main event.

In the first game of the double bill at May’s Bounty, Hook batted first against Oakley and scored 151-5 from their 20 overs.

Graham Buckingham led the way with 39 and was well supported by Matt McNally (33) and Liam Doran (33 not out). Alex Brundle was the pick of the Oakley bowlers with 3-35.

Oakley’s reply saw them bowled out for 101 in 18 overs, as Dan Sumner top scored with 35 and James Bright hit 22. Steve Cates returned excellent figures of 3-3 and was well supported by Colin Lye (3-19) and Ollie May (2-23).

In the cup final, Hook batted first against a Rotherfield Park side made up of many players from Alton, who play in the Southern League Premier Division.

The Park bowlers certainly limited Hook’s explosive batting line-up as they were only able to score 91 from their 20 overs.

Jordan Hobday did best with the bat, scoring 31, and Richard Willcock chipped in with a late 20. Park’s excellent bowling attack saw Seb Newens (2-24), Scott Myers (2-16), Tom Paul (2-16) and Andy Tapp (2-29) all take wickets.

Rotherfield’s reply started badly as they were reduced to 2-2 courtesy of Spencer Champ (2-20).

They hit back thanks to match-winning knock of 45 from Michael Heffernan, while a late 18 from Richard Anthony helped them to 94-5 with an over to spare.

This meant a new name was added to list of winners of a competition which is over 60 years old.

Herffernan’s fine innings with the bat saw him pick up the Rita Thompson Memorial Trophy as the man-of-the-match.

Park’s Tom Paul added to his cup winner’s medal as he also won the Guy Jewell Trophy for the most wickets in the competition with 11.

The Mary Jewell Cup for the top batsman went to Old Basing’s Darren Turner, who hit tons against Rotherwick ITW and Whitchurch in the first two rounds of the competition.

Organiser Bill Blake said: “I would like to thank everyone at Basingstoke and North Hants Cricket Club, especially the ground staff, the Guy Jewell Committee, all umpires and scorers.

“I would also like to thank Finch Group Insurance, especially Vincent Gardiner, all the players and officials from all of the teams and a special thanks should go to Derek Dicker for his help and support throughout the year.”
