HOOK goalkeeper Jonny Henly, who spent time on loan at Basingstoke Town last season, has signed for Championship side Ipswich Town.

Henly, who grew up in north Hampshire and is a product of the Reading youth system, played the opening three games of the 2014-15 season for Town while regular goalkeeper and Royals team-mate Stuart Moore served a suspension.

The 21-year-old saved a penalty as Jason Bristow's men beat eventual champions Bromley 2-0 and spent the end of last season on loan at Welling in the National League.

Henly, who is a Scottish international at under-21 level, was allowed to leave Reading over the summer and enjoyed trial periods at Queens Park Rangers and Ross County.

However, he has been training with Ipswich since the start of August and has obviously impressed manager Mick McCarthy as he has signed a one-year deal at Portman Road.

Henly said: “Joining Ipswich is definitely the right move for me, and I look forward to working with the coaching staff over the course of this season to help take my game to the next level.

“Shortly after I arrived at Ipswich, I knew that it was a good fit, which is important for my personal development.

“Mick McCarthy and his coaching staff are very much about giving young players like me the chance to shine, while the players’ facilities at Ipswich are excellent. They are probably even better than what I was used to at Reading, which quite something in itself."
