BASINGSTOKE ice skaters enjoyed success at the Basingstoke Artistic competition, which attracted a wide range of skaters and some creative programmes.

Skaters were allowed to use props and costumes not normally allowed in competition and with no technical scores, perform-ance and entertainment value were key for success.

In class one for bronze, silver and gold skaters, there were puppets, mermaids, pirates and sailors.

Grace Cook won with her routine to My Boy Lollipop. Joint second were Ellie Cellier-Round and Sophie Knight.

In class two for skaters up for National Ice Skating Association level two, Ellen Townsend won with a Matilda routine. Ava Wilson took silver with a programme as Mary Poppins and Lucy Gunner placed third.

In class three, Charli Gillard came first with a wedding-themed Hairspray number, with Lulu Abiri second with a break dancing routine.

Gillard and Sadie Cook won their class with a Bugsy Malone routine.

In second were Sarah Bromfield and Gabrielle Yeo, who were a pair of pink and blue toothbrushes, while Chloe O’ Donnell and Eliza Hubberstey took the bronze position.

The final class, for adults, saw Sue Ellen Giles and Chris Fenlon with with a routine inspired by the Waitrose Christmas advert. Eleanor Acreman and Helen Gardiner’s Little Mermaid won silver, while Steve Millar, Wendy Baldwin and Sarah Lewendon came third with a Star Trek routine.

Simon Hawthorne, Basingstoke Ice Skating Association chairman said: “The competition was a great success. It’s nice for skaters to have the opportunity to express themselves and work as a team.”
