Toby Alderweireld’s dad has denied reports that his son has sealed a move to Tottenham.

The summer transfer saga surrounding the signing of the Belgian defender rumbled on yesterday with claims that Alderweireld had passed a medical at Spurs and agreed a five-year deal with the club being shot down by his father.

Vic Alderweireld, who also acts as his son’s agent, was forced to make a public statement to deny a move to White Hart Lane was complete.

Saints still believe they have the right to sign Alderweireld for £6.8m after Atletico Madrid failed to buy out that clause before the specified date.

Vic Alderweireld said: “We have a concrete agreement with no one. There are conversations right and left but currently there are no changes from the last few weeks.”

The news came as Saints also confirmed their fourth summer signing in the shape of 25-year-old defender Cuco Martina.

The Curaçao international agreed a two-year deal and linked up with the squad in time for this week’s training camp in Austria. He moves from FC Twente for a fee of £1.1m.

Martina, 25 previously played for Erwin Koeman, Saints’ current assistant manager, during a two-year spell at RKC Waalwijk.

Executive director of football, Les Reed, said in a club statement: “Cuco is a versatile and experienced defender who will add strength and depth to our squad ahead of the coming season.

“Injuries to Ryan Bertrand and Bevis Mugabi highlighted the need to bring in another defender, and Cuco is the perfect solution.

“He is another hungry player who is excited about coming to our club, and will provide healthy competition for places in our defence.”

Martina added: “I’m very happy to be here at a big club like Southampton. I’ve followed Southampton now for two years and I see they are now a big club.

“I know Ronald Koeman and Erwin Koeman – I worked with Erwin for one year and everything was good. He knows my qualities and I know what he wants.

“It was a dream for me to play in the Premier League and finally I can play now. I hope to play many games and show the fans who I am.”
