ALL involved in local football were shocked to hear the news that two of its stalwarts Arthur Leaver and Roy Davies, passed away suddenly within hours of each other on Friday afternoon and early Saturday morning.

Arthur has been involved in Basingstoke and District League football since starting as a club linesman with Sherfield in 1969 and he later registered as a referee, quickly gaining promotion to the Hampshire League.

The 69-year-old became team manager of Ramsdell United Reserve team and when Dale Alley was formed he had four years with them in the Sunday League. He then went onto assist in the running of Stratfield Saye and Griffin Athletic.

Arthur then joined the league's management committee 22 years ago and was quickly appointed fixture secretary, a position he has held with distinction.

Arthur was well know and liked by all in football and could be seen on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings out with his camera taking pictures for the Gazette, which was much appreciated by the clubs and players and he will be a hard act to follow.

Arthur has received both Hampshire and North Hants FA Services to football awards in recognition of his fine achievements in the game.

The past few seasons Arthur become involved with Basingstoke Town Ladies and there was a minute's silence before their Chairman's Cup final which was attended by Arthur's wife and daughter Pauline and Rhiannon.

Arthur was the club's match reporter and photographer and in the words of their director of football Craig Prall was the most friendliest person you could ever wish to meet.

Arthur also enjoyed his cricket and was vice president of the Ramsdell Cricket Club.

His funeral will take place at Basingstoke Crematorium on May 29 at 3.30pm and all are welcome.

Roy Davies has been on the management committee for the league for the past 13 years and is a vice president, he is also the league representative for the North Hants Football Association.

Roy’s football involvement has mainly been with Basingstoke Labour Club, going back to the late 70s when they were a real force .

He remained with them acting as linesman, general dogs body and was also assistant manager under Geoff Poulter in the glory days.

The 66-year-old stayed with them through thick and thin and was pleased to see the team on the rise again being promoted to Division One this season.

Roy was single and retired last year from working many years at Jewson’s the Building Supplier, where he was popular with the staff and customers, as he was in his quiet way with all who met him.
