JUSTIN Rose’s return to top form continued as he made birdies at the last two holes to win the Zurich Classic of New Orleans.

The north Hampshire golfer had been out of shape heading into the Masters earlier this month, but he impressed at Augusta, finishing in a tie for second place.

After taking a week off, he was able to maintain his fine form at TPC Louisiana over the weekend, overcoming substantial weather delays to shoot four sub-70 rounds.

He moved into the lead by making birdies at the last two holes, sinking a putt from 10 feet on the par-three 17th and making another from 13ft to secure the title.

Cameron Tringale, who finished second, was inches away from forcing a play-off, his chip for eagle at the last coming up just short.

Rose’s 22-under-par total of 266 was a new course record, while the win sees him move up three places to sixth in the world rankings.

More importantly, it should give him plenty of momentum heading into the vital summer period.

“This is a great shot in the arm for my confidence and I have just got to keep it going,” the 34-year-old said. “It obviously gets me up there in everything I want to be in – a boost in the world rankings, a boost in the FedEx Cup, a huge boost in confidence.

“Now I can target the major championships all the way through the summer without having to chase anything in between. It’s going to be great.”

Rose got off to a somewhat slow start and found himself one-over-par after six holes of his opening round, but from that point on, he played almost faultless golf, going bogey-free for the remaining 66 holes.

After an opening round of 69 (-3), he made his move towards the top of the leaderboard with a second round of 66 (-6).

Bad weather on Saturday meant that his third round was curtailed after just six holes, leaving him with 30 to play on the final day. However, he showed no sign of fatigue, recording a third round of 65 (-7) before shooting 66 (-6) in round four.
