A MAN leapt from a third floor flat to escape after fire broke out in a Glasgow tenement.

He suffered serious head and back injuries and was rushed to Glasgow Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Emergency services received calls to a fire on the second floor of the building in Tollcross Road, in the East End.

Firefighters from Parkhead and Cambuslang stations were first on the scene and they needed breathing apparatus because of the thick smoke.

The man who jumped was found in the street by firefighters, who gave him first aid until paramedics arrived.

One resident said: "There was a lot of commotion. An ambulance arrived and I saw someone being carried away on a stretcher."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
