JIMI HENDRIX may be one of the world's ultimate rock gods but I reckon I could give him a run for his money on Guitar Hero on Xbox.

So when I heard that Glasgow was hosting an official air guitar championship for the first time, I thought I would go for it.

After all, how hard can it be pretending to hold a guitar and strum at thin air?

I enlisted the help of John Georgie, the man behind the championship taking place today at Glasgow's Classic Grand to teach me some legendary moves.

John said, "Air guitar gives people the chance to act out their dream guitarist, dress up and just have fun which is what it is all about."

First up, after the all important stretching, was Jimi Hendrix's famous move dubbed by John the Firetail Frenzy.

Needless to say I felt pretty stupid kneeling on the ground strumming away at my air guitar but with several steps to this move I had to concentrate in order to get it right.

First I had to flick my pretend lighter on, light the ground and then rock out whilst pulling my best air guitar face. Not attractive!

After mastering that move, we went on to the Van Halen Hurdle made famous by guitarist Eddie van Halen. While John flew threw the air looking graceful yet rock and roll, I just crashed to the ground.

There was so much to do at once and trying to jump in the splits, while strumming and not looking too crazed proved pretty hard.

But I managed to perfect it - almost - after about the eighth attempt. In fact, I was so dedicated that I ended up with a sore arm, my first-ever air guitar injury.

So after an intense masterclass, how does John think I got on?

"You picked up the stances very quickly and didn't drop your air guitar once. I would give you an A minus," he said.

Avril Lavigne had better watch out, there's a new rock chick in town!
