INDONESIA: Ninety people were today confirmed dead after a plane crash in Indonesia.

Twelve people survived the accident, but their condition is not known.

Rescuers this morning found the smouldering wreckage of the jetliner, which went missing during a storm, in a mountainous region of Sulawesi island.

They are now at the crash site trying to evacuate the survivors The Boeing 737 was operated by local carrier Adam Air.

An Adam Air spokesman said 90 people were killed and that there were 12 survivors.

Local police Chief Colonel Genot Hariyanto said: "The plane is destroyed and many bodies are around there."

The plane was on a domestic flight from Java island to Sulawesi when it disappeared yesterday, about an hour before it was due to land amid very bad weather.

Hundreds of people have been gathering at Manado airport, the aircraft's destination, desperate to hear any news of relatives.
