BASINGSTOKE goalkeeper Joe McDonnell looks set for a run in the AFC Wimbledon team after keeping a clean sheet on his full debut.
The 20-year-old, who came through the academy system at Basingstoke Town, made three really good saves as Wimbledon held visiting Southend United to a 0-0 draw last night.
McDonnell stopped Barry Corr opening the scoring early on, before denying the same player with a fingertip save after the break, pushing his shot onto the underside of the crossbar. Then, in injury-time, the Wimbledon ’keeper pulled off another excellent stop, this time from Jack Payne, to ensure his side claimed a point.
McDonnell made his debut last month, coming on as a substitute for James Shea, and with Wimbledon’s first-choice ’keeper ruled out for several weeks after cracking a bone in his ankle, the Basingstoke youngster looks set for a run in the side.
