THE start of 2015 looks set to be a busy and exciting time for teenage ice skating star Danielle Harrison.

The 15-year-old has just returned from Austria, where she represented Great Britain at the European Youth Olympic Festival.

Next for the teenager is a trip to the Junior World Figure Skating Championships, which takes place in Tallinn, Estonia, from March 2 to March 8.

Harrison earned her place at the event after she won the British Junior Ladies title in Sheffield late last year, despite being one of the youngest skaters in the competition.

In the European Youth Olympic Festival, Harrison finished 10th overall.

The teenager was placed 22 out of 30 skaters after a disappointing short programme in which she missed three of seven elements.

The 15-year-old said: “It didn’t go well to be honest, which is a shame because I know that I could have done so much better.

“I didn’t land the jumps well, which took the points off, but the rest of the routine went well.”

It was all to change two days later as an excellent free programme saw her placed eighth.

After this, Harrison said: “I felt so much happier with my performance compared to the short programme.

“I actually went out and skated what I am capable of. I also showed everyone that I can come back from a bad skate.”

She added: “In my warm up for the free programme, I went to practice my triples and as I skated forward my boot just broke, so I had to skate off and check to see what had happened.

“My lace had snapped, so I had to tie a knot and hope it would be okay.

“My lace snapping distracted me and I didn't think about competing.

“Sometimes when I think too hard it goes wrong, so in a weird way it was good because it distracted me.”

Another big plus for Harrison was that she came close to her personal best score in the free programme, which can only bode well as she heads to the World Championships.
