LONDON Irish’s Premiership woes continued as they were beaten 48-16 in Wasps’ first game at their new home in Coventry yesterday afternoon.

A crowd of 28,254 travelled to the Ricoh Arena for the game, a record attendance for a Premiership match played at a regular home ground, and Wasps were worthy winners.

Fly-half Andy Goode kicked six penalties during the first half, but Irish prop Geoff Cross went over for the only try, with Tom Homer’s conversions, and three penalties, meant that the visitors trailed by just two points at half-time.

However, it was pretty much one-way traffic after the break, with Wasps adding a further 30 points and Irish failing to further trouble the scoreboard.

Joe Simpson, Elliot Daly and Andrea Masi all crossed the line for the hosts but it was Goode who stole the show, with a try, two conversions and a penalty taking his personal tally to 33 points, a new Premiership record.

The result means that Irish remain 11th in the Premiership table, with just London Welsh below them. The bottom two meet at the Madejski Stadium on Boxing Day, a game that both sides will be desperate to win.
