BASINGSTOKE and Mid Hants athlete Brendan O’Connor represented Ireland at the European Cross Country Championships at the weekend.

The youngster travelled to Bulgaria to compete in the under-20 event, finishing 85th on a snow covered course that gradually turned to slush, making for difficult conditions.

Other members of the Down Grange club made the shorter trip to Oxford for the South of England Inter-Counties Championship, where they represented Hampshire.

Maddie Deadman continued her fine form, claiming the bronze medal in the under-15 girls’ race. Rebecca Poole was 45th as the Hampshire team finished third.

Ben Pattison was just outside the podium places in the under-13 boys’ race, finishing fourth, only 12 seconds behind the winner.

Elsewhere, Lucy Wildash was 10th in the under-17 women’s event, helping the Hampshire team to third place, while James Beeks’ 23rd place helped the county to second in the under-17 men’s race.

The club had two finishers inside the top 30 in the under-20 women’s race. Charlotte Chalwin was 23rd, just ahead of Gemma Bigg, who came 29th.
