BASINGSTOKE Bison young guns Cameron Wynn, Declan Balmer and Matt Selby helped Great Britain under-20s to International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship Division Two gold and promotion back to Division One.

The young Brits enjoyed a clean sweep of wins in the tournament in Estonia and won the event with a game to spare.

The quest for gold opened with a 4-2 win over the Netherlands as the EPL stars Ivan Antonov (Bracknell), Ollie Betteridge (Swindon), Jordan Cownie (Milton Keynes) and Bobby Chamberlain (Manchester) all scored.

In the second game, GB looked in trouble as they headed to the first break trailing 2-0 to Lithuania.

However, man-of-the-match Wynn scored a shorthanded marker at 24:41.

Further goals from Antonov, Sam Duggan, Cownie and Chamberlain ensured a narrow 5-4 victory.

This proved to be the final game of the tournament for captain Selby as he experienced concussion symptoms.

The side’s third outing was a lot more straightforward, as the young Brits won 5-2 against Romania.

Duggan scored the opener, before Betteridge doubled the advantage, assisted by Wynn.

Milton Keynes’ duo Lewis Hook and Cownie, with a brace, completed their biggest win of the tournament.

GB took to the ice for their fourth game against Korea knowing that victory would give them the gold, but after 60 minutes the teams were tied at 4-4.

This was after the leading goal scorer in Estonia, Chamberlain, scored a hat-trick and Hook netted the other.

It was left to Cownie to win the game for the Brits in a sudden-death penalty shoot-out.

The final game of the tournament was against the hosts Estonia and Hook scored goals in the first and second periods, while Chamberlain netted the third in a 3-1 win.

Bison forward Wynn finished with a goal and an assist, while defenceman Balmer ended the tournament plus three, making him one of the team’s top plus/minus players.

Talking after the tournament Bison’s Balmer said: “It was really amazing to win gold.

“I think the high spot of the tournament was winning the fourth game after a penalty shoot-out to secure the gold medal.”

Balmer started the tournament as one half of a defensive partnership with Herd teammate Selby, but after he was injured the side just rolled five defencemen.
