BASINGSTOKE'S Kit Symons was last night appointed as manager of Championship side Fulham.

The 43-year-old, who was born in the town, has been handed the job on a permanent basis after an impressive spell as caretaker-manager.

Symons took over on an interim basis more than a month ago following the sacking of Felix Magath. He took charge of a side bottom of the table, with one point from seven games, but the appointment had a positive effect on the team, who have won five of the nine games played under his stewardship.

Announcing Symons' appointment, Fulham chairman Shahid Khan said: "We've been a different football club, on and off the pitch, since Kit stepped in as our caretaker manager.

"His passion for Fulham is evident and contagious. I believe the promise ahead of him is extremely bright. Above all, Kit understands and is committed to our goals, and he knows there is much work ahead."

Symons, a centre-back, began his playing career at Portsmouth, before going on to represent Manchester City, Fulham and Crystal Palace. He also made 36 international appearances for Wales.

The Fulham job is his first permanent management role, but he had two spells as caretaker-manager of Palace and also led Colchester United on an interim basis.

Symons is due to address the media for the first time as full-time manager this afternoon.
