THE Basingstoke RFC Griffins enjoyed a 52-24 win over visiting Trojans in a Hampshire Merit South West encounter.

The home side scored eight tries in total in the victory, with Peter Garlando and man-of-the-match Rilwan Lawal both scoring hat-tricks, while Dan Williams and Matt Woodhouse added a try each.

Griffins coach Steve Parker said: “That is three wins out of three in the league for us.

“There was a good platform from our forwards, which allowed the backs to run riot. It was another polished performance and a good day at the office.”

The Cavaliers travelled down to Tottonians fourth team to face a strong and well-drilled home side.

The weakened visitors competed hard for the full 80 minutes, but came out on the wrong end of a 57-7 scoreline.

Scott Barnard scored ’Stoke’s only try, which Shaun Fennell converted.

Cavaliers coach Chris Hughes said: “It has always been a tough place to come, Tottonians are one of the strongest sides in the Merit set-up.

“We are struggling with injuries to key players at present, but I was pleased with our efforts.

“We kept going for the whole game, with a lot of players out of position, so I’m proud of the fight the boys showed and next week we will be looking to bring back a win.”

This weekend, the Cavaliers are at home to Portsmouth III, while the Dragons entertain Hertford.

The Griffins are on their travels to Milbrook II and Basingstoke fifths are at May’s Bounty, where they face Chineham II.
