MORGAN Schneiderlin wants to help Saints qualify for Europe by winning the Capital One Cup.

Saints will have to win away to Arsenal for the first time in 27 years to progress into the fourth round.

But Schneiderlin sees no reason why Saints cannot win the first cup match between the sides since the 2003 FA Cup final – and go on to win their first major trophy since 1976.

“Why not?” he said. “Anything’s possible. We want to do something great in the cup. That's very important to us, it’s the shortest way to a European place so it will be good for the fans and the club to have a good run.

“We’ll go there and play our game and do the best we can.” Not since November 1987, when Danny Wallace scored the only goal in the old first division, have Saints beaten the Gunners on home turf.

Now Schneiderlin is hoping Saints can overcome an Arsenal side that may well include former teammate Calum Chambers.

“Calum’s a very nice guy, we’re all happy for him to have such a good move but hopefully he won’t be happy after the game,” said Schneiderlin.

Chambers was the last and most controversial of Saints’ big-money departures during the summer.

Schneiderlin was also linked with a move to the Emirates but tweeted his fury at being told he would not be joining the exodus within 48 hours of the teenager’s £16m move.

Two months on, Schneiderlin’s response has been admirable. His three goals from the first five Premier League games include an early contender for goal of the season – the wonderful finish that completed a 41-pass move against Newcastle last week – and he is enjoying life under Ronald Koeman.

“Now the transfer window is shut we're going to spend a year together, adapt and show that we're good and can do something right,” said Schneiderlin, who is under contract till 2017.

“Our style is different to under Mauricio Pochettino, we’re not playing so hard and so high, we’re playing in a more controlled way and have started well.

“But let's stay focused and keep our feet on the ground.”
