Saints manager Ronald Koeman praised the spirit displayed by Victor Wanyama, after his match-winning contribution against ten-man Swansea.

The midfielder came off the bench to score a late winner at the Liberty Stadium – his first ever goal for the club – sending his side up to second in the Premier League.

Koeman said: “It was a great goal. He gave the spirit to the team when he came in.”

Saints had been under significant pressure in the first-half from Swansea, before striker Wilfried Bony was sent off shortly before the break for two yellow cards, each for a foul on Maya Yoshida.

Koeman said Bony was perhaps “unlucky” with the first, but that the second was a definite booking.

He admitted it was a moment that altered the entire course of the match.

“After the 11 v 10 it changed,” he said. “Always that kind of decision, a referee’s red card, is difficult for one, but maybe a little bit better for the other team.

“After that, ok, we had the patience to have the ball possession and to wait and create the possibilities.

“We scored a great goal, and that was enough for three points.”

James Ward-Prowse left the stadium in a protective boot after being carried off in the second half, but Koeman said he did not think the injury was too serious, adding that Yoshida should also recover quickly after coming off with a knock, while the hamstring issue that ruled out Toby Alderweireld is not a bad one.
