TADLEY Calleva enjoyed the greatest night in the club’s history as they defeated holders Basingstoke Town in the Hampshire Senior Cup after a dramatic penalty shoot- out.

The visitors, who play four leagues below Town, twice came back from a goal down at the Soccer AM Stadium on Tuesday night.

Brett Denham cancelled out Rob Rice’s first- half strike, and then Andrew Charsley fired in a free-kick five minutes from time after Louie Soares had scored a penalty.

With no extra time, the game went straight to penalties, and after five spot kicks each, the score was locked at 4-4.

Tadley’s Callum Bush edged his side ahead, and when Jamie Brown fired over the bar, it sparked a pitch invasion and wild celebrations by fans of the Tadley side.

Tadley Calleva boss Danny Dolan said: “It is just unbelievable, beating them in their own back yard. I felt we deserved to win as my players gave everything.

“This was the greatest night ever for the club, and I must thank our 12th man – the fans – for the great support on the night.”

The second round tie ended 2-2 at the Soccer AM Stadium after 90 minutes and went straight to penalties, which Tadley won 5-4.

Rob Rice gave the home side the lead after 19 minutes with an excellent strike as they dominated the opening minutes with Lloyd Macklin and Julian Owusu also going close.

On the hour mark, Tadley levelled things as James Tennant’s cross was converted by Brett Denham.

Louie Soares gave Town the lead again from the penalty spot after Jason Kingston’s foul. Then with five minutes left, Andrew Charsley hammered in a free- kick to make it 2-2.

In the shoot-out, Mario Nurse scored first and Soares levelled it, then Denham saw his spot kick saved by Kieran Green.

Rice put the Dragons ahead and Tadley skipper Scott Kinge levelled things.

As the tension grew, Macklin then saw his penalty saved by Tom Hindmarsh.

Charsley and Tennant converted Tadley’s next two as did Owusu and Sam Argent for Town. This sent the shoot-out into sudden death and Bush put Tadley ahead before new Town signing Jamie Brown fired over to send the holders tumbling out of the competition.

Victorious boss Danny Dolan said: “This is great boost for us and I think we could play Basingstoke a 100 times and they would probably win 99 of them, but tonight it was our night and it is a great feeling.”

Basingstoke Town made nine changes to their line-up, but it still looked a strong team.

Town manager Jason Bristow said: “I was hoping players would take this opportunity to stake a claim to a first team place. This did not prove to be the case and I was very disappointed to lose.

This weekend, Tadley have no game.
