JOSH Kelly has been selected to play for England under-15 ice hockey team after successful trials.

The 14-year-old defenceman, from Harrow Way, will travel to Amiens, in France, in October for his England debut, which is the first stepping stone towards playing for Great Britain at under-18 level in a few years’ time.

It was a brilliant news for the teenager, who suffered a broken collarbone early last season.

He returned to help Guildford Firestorm under-14s to he southern and then national title with a 5-3 victory over Sheffield at Ice Sheffield.

The Aldworth School pupil, pictured above, started his career with Basingstoke Bison in 2006, before switching to the Surrey outfit in 2010. This season, he will play solely for their under-16 side.

During the summer, Kelly also attended the Marian Gaborik Hockey Camp in Slovakia, where he met Marian Gaborik, a Stanley Cup winner with Los Angeles Kings last season and Boston Bruin Zdeno Chara, a Stanley Cup winner three years ago.

The players at the camp were of a high standard and this certainly helped Kelly.

He had to finish the camp two days early in order to get back for the England trials, but it proved to be worthwhile. His mother Caroline Kelly said: “Our family are incredibly proud of his achievement and are looking forward to seeing Josh on the ice in his England shirt.”
