England hopeful Clyne has time on his side

Nathaniel Clyne has admitted his disappointment in missing out on selection for Roy Hodgson’s latest England squad but still believes his time will come.

The 23-year-old was on the verge of being selected for the stand-by list for England’s World Cup campaign in Brazil and has had a sparkling start to the new season.

With other right backs also struggling with injuries, hopes were high at Saints that Clyne would win his first international call-up for the friendly against Norway and the European Championship qualifying match with Switzerland However, he was once more overlooked.

Clyne was honest enough to admit that it was blow but has far from given up hope of forcing his way into Hodgson’s plans in the future.

He said: “I am a bit disappointed that I’m not in.

“I think I’ve done pretty well and especially knowing there are a lot of right backs that have been injured.

“I’ve got to keep performing well and hopefully my chance will come soon. You’ve always got to look at the positives and not the negatives.

“There is stuff I need to work on in my game and hopefully if I can do well I can get the call-up.”

Clyne has had to watch the man he battled with for the Saints right back spot last season, Calum Chambers, get an England nod following his £16m move to Arsenal and is happy rather than envious of his former teammate.

“I was pleased for him. He’s a good lad,” said Clyne.

“He’s made the step up and has done well for Arsenal and deserves his opportunities.

“He’s got a call-up for England and that’s good.

“Hopefully if I keep putting in performances I can make the same steps as him.”

Next up for Clyne and his Saints teammates is a trip to West Ham this afternoon, where they will be looking for their first win of the new Premier League campaign.

“They are a hard-working team. Sam Allardyce always puts out a team to work hard and a physical team,” reckoned Clyne.

“We are preparing for the long ball as well and if we match them then it should be a good game.

“We haven’t got the win yet, even though we have been playing well.

“Against West Brom it was difficult to break them down. They came and sat back.

“When we play against West Ham away we can come out and get them on the counter attack.”

Why is there so much hype about playing for England.

This World Cup was a total embarrassment, it nearly wrecked our club as Woy poached our players for his friends in the big 4. And in 5 decades of watching football nearly every England game has been a crashing disappointment.

Yes it will - just a matter of time. He has a great attitude and will continue to improve. From our club's point of view, having players on the verge of the England squad and aspiring to get there is great for us. They put in the extra work load and are keen to impress.

What a great head this lad seems to have on such young shoulders. So far, and I say this guardedly, this man has been a model pro - just got his head down and plyed his trade - long may it continue. Nat you are in danger of becoming a hero at this club.
Hope we can hold on you to and your ambition to put the lions on is fulfilled, you are certainly as good if not better than anyone else in your position in the last couple of season. Thank you.

IF you see woy at any of saints matches, I say IF, then you know woy will be interested. BUT I doubt it. But just to be in the premier is more important. Who knows saints may even be better than last season, BUT they will have to go some, so here's looking for our first win today.

How Clyne is not nailed on right back for England is a crime. There is no doubt if he was sat on the bench at Man Utd he would be in the squad, and there lies the problem with the national team.

Not sure about that jls, and I disagree with Nathaniel as I don't think the team has played well apart from the second half at Liverpool.
Hopefully we improve as the new players adjust and step up to Prem standard, however I think we miss playing the high tempo pressing game and have seen us start to play the long ball game up to Pelle only for him to loose possession.

Cline was partly at fault for not covering Stirling for the first goal which was highlighted by the pundits and would not have passed Woy's ears, how ever his attacking and crossing is important to us as Bertrand has not done as much attacking as Luke did.

I am still hoping for at least 3 proven top quality players before Monday night but this is looking unlikely now.

Chambers would of been picked ahead of Clyne even without playing a game for Arssnul, amazed how much he's improved after just a couple of games for them.

Nat Clyne will get his chance, and be a regular one day for the England team. He's making that solid steady progress. No flash in the pan stuff for him. Keep up the good work my boy. You're a Saints gem.
