Chambers gets England call

Calum Chambers

Calum Chambers

Roy Hodgson has named four uncapped players in his squad for the upcoming games against Norway and Switzerland, including former Saints star Calum Chambers.

Jack Colback, Chambers - who rose through the Saints academy before moving to Arsenal for £16m this summer - Danny Rose and Fabian Delph are included in a new-look 22-man party.

New Saints goalkeeper Fraser Forster is also in the squad.

Tottenham winger Andros Townsend returns to the squad after missing the World Cup through injury and there is also a place for Everton's 20-year-old defender John Stones.

Chambers has caught the eye at Arsenal since his £16m move from Southampton and has earned a call-up despite the concerns of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger.

Danny Rose has been rewarded for his good early-season form with Tottenham and Fabian Delph comes into the squad because of his progress at Aston Villa.

It is Colback's call-up which comes as the biggest surprise.

The Newcastle midfielder has rarely been mentioned as a possible candidate for England duty, but Hodgson's hand has been forced by a series of injuries.

Kyle Walker (pelvis), Ross Barkley (knee), Theo Walcott (knee), Glen Johnson (thigh), Luke Shaw (hamstring), Michael Carrick (ankle), Jon Flanagan (knee), Adam Lallana (knee), Chris Smalling (groin), Kieran Gibbs (hamstring), Jay Rodriguez (knee) and Andy Carroll (ankle) are all missing through injury.

And with Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole having now retired, there is an obvious lack of experience in the squad, which is set to meet on Sunday night.

Roy Hodgson has named Wayne Rooney as the new England captain.

The 28-year-old Manchester United skipper got the nod ahead of the likes of Chelsea's Gary Cahill and Manchester City's Joe Hart to become the successor to Steven Gerrard, who retired from international football after the World Cup.

Rooney, who has worn the England armband on two previous occasions, will lead a new-look England squad featuring four uncapped players into the upcoming matches against Norway and Switzerland.

England squad for the Euro 2016 qualifier against Switzerland and the friendly against Norway is as follows:

Forster (Southampton), Foster (West Brom), Hart (Manchester City); Baines (Everton), Cahill (Chelsea), Chambers (Arsenal), Jagielka (Everton), Jones (Manchester United), Rose (Tottenham), Stones (Everton); Colback (Newcastle), Delph (Aston Villa), Henderson (Liverpool), Milner (Manchester City), Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Sterling (Liverpool), Townsend (Tottenham), Wilshere (Arsenal); Lambert (Liverpool), Rooney (Manchester United), Sturridge (Liverpool), Welbeck (Manchester United).

Feel for Clyne. Hopefully, his performances this season will earn him his chance.

Now to focus on the French squad, which should be announced this afternoon. Will Morgan be included? If not, what would Deschamps be trying to tell Morgan?

If he picks him it will be because he's still with Saints. If not the message will be that he shouldn't even think of leaving Saints.

Calum was the daftest of all our transfers. So we have cover but which one of these will be in the England squad soon, excluding Clyne, who must be getting very near.

Calum is straight into the Arsenal team and playing Champions League which emphasises his importance and ability. As I say, daft!

I bet Calum is in the squad longer than Rickie or Adam. Jay obviously not considered though Luke is a different argument.

Why under the heading "Saints news" are they talking about an Arsenal player?, I have nothing against the gooners and also admire thier transfer and wage policy as it's similar to ours, but they have NOTHING to do with Saints apart from being our oppo's in the next round of the league cup.

A very shameless statement from Hodgson that if you play for the top four you're in. Clyne kept Chambers out on merit last season, and has been terrific so far this season. Chambers is good, but when he puts on an Arsenal shirt he becomes, like the hyped up Wilshere, international class. Not just Arsenal - look at Jones, Smalling, Cleverley, Johnson.

I agree with this - it has long been the England way that you're only good enough if you're playing for the top 4 and playing in the Champions League. I thought last season this was being reversed with Saints contributing players to the national team but I wonder if Roy has had a word that they need to move on? I remember Roy's comment congratulating Rickie on his move to Liverpool which I was shocked by. The national manager should not be making comments like this as what signal does it send to clubs like ours who want to develop players for the national team. I for one will hope that Roy doesn't come back to St Mary's any time soon as wrong as that sounds.

So - because he's now in an Arsenal shirt (incidentally playing against the same opposition no matter what other shirt he could wear) he's now good enough to play for England. Which means Woy, he was good enough to play for England in May?, June?,July? - please feel free to stop me when you feel I've reached the point when he suddenly became good enough for England!
What was that Woy - speak up - Logically he must have been good enough to go to the world cup I hear you whispering.
Glad you didn't in a way though Woy 'cos if one more of our England players had been tapped up by CL potential sides it might have led us here down in the sticks to think that you might, just might have offered some sort of encouragement for them to jump ship and join aforementioned sides. Now imagine if JRod had not been injured and he too had joined your little shameful soiree in hotter climes - that would have been just toooooo much co-incidence wouldn't it Woy. But wait, what if you hadn't offered your impartial wisdoms to these players and England had fielded a first XI with the following -
Gk - Forster
RB - Clyne
LB - Shaw
CB - Chambers
AM - Lallana
ST - Lambert
ST - Rodrigues.
Seven from the same club? Sound like a potential CL side to you Woy. Wait I hear you cry "The status quo won't allow it - the world will have turned upside down - those skilful little upstarts from Shitehampton or somewhere outside of the Sky network clique taking too much interest away from the establishment stars - we won't be able to sell any England shirts with Clyne from whereverhampton on the back best get them all snapped up - that's better Chambers from Arsenal, Shaw from Man U - yes the money men will support those. Earth is back in its orbit - a little worrying there for a moment though eh Woy!?
Something smells very badly at the top of the refuse pile Woy and it's not the used nappies either, perhaps you'd like to help us find where the smell is coming from? What's that Woy - you only deal with matters concerning the team. We agree Woy but who's team - certainly not those bothersome little van makers from Sheephampton or whever it was.

If it weren't cutting of my nose to spite my face Woy - I would like Saints academy to phase out all English born players and concentrate on foreigners thereby denying you and the FA afia access to our rich pool and instead promoting young kids from alles uber der platz to learn how to kick English (sorry I meant FA approved English) rissoles at every meeting until every last one of you begs us Saints fans for forgiveness from your yachts/villas on the Algarve. That's if you can pass the Nigel Adkins man in the glass test. If there is any substance to any of the above wild ramblings hang your head in shame. If not - call me a conspiracy nut (as opposed to been on the planet a long time, not totally dense, fairly discerning, suspicious of you and those that pull your strings, concerned, public spirited individual) "Just saying Woy......... no need to book a plane that quickly..........Woy

So Chambers has been picked for England .In my opinion he isn't fit to lace Nathaniel Clyne's boots. At least Clyne and his fellow Saints will have the last laugh on Judas Chambers when Saints give the Gunners a tonking I and knock them out of the League Cup.
I expect another famous away win for the SAINTS who will also get the 3 points in London this weekend when they hammer the Hammers.

Hmmm, I was dubious about the 'England set-up is corrupt' theory, but it really is starting to stink now.

I do NOT understand how Clyne can fairly be left out - there must be an agenda - and I do NOT understand how Chambers can suddenly walk into the squad on the basis of, what, three or four games at centre back?

Roy (the FA) is sending out a clear message: you MUST play for a 'big' team to get a call-up (I don't even know what the Colbeck decision is about).

Appalling judgement call letting CC go, which calls into questions all the activity bar Shaw which was nailed on..as for the incomers we seem to get as many wrong as right so…Tadic yes Forster yes…Pelle and Long probably no….getting rid of 5 proven players means we need 10 to be sure, to be sure….never mind improving the three weak positions that would have made us top 3-5…
I support the Saints however like Lowe before I think KL and the board under estimate what it took to get to were we where and the harsh talents of NC.

Been over and over this one mate - done it to death and the record is stuck.

Go back over the last 3 years and tell us all again how you would have done things differently - or I could save you a lot of grief (not that you don't like grief of course) and ask you the one question which there is no answer to.
How were you ever going to stop a two faced, scheming, lying young pro who started believing his own publicity and was captain of this team (and was loved by most fans here) doing the dirty on us, shirking his responsibility and scheming (a long time before he actually went) BTW they were offering way above anything we could long before any contact became official apparently. Now here is the question - We would all like to know how Seedhouse would've kept him?
Another question how were we going to keep a manager who clearly wanted to use us to move on and did so in a very conniving way it has to be said. Waiting to hear how you'd have kept him.
How would you have kept a ceo who was throwing his dolly out because a billionairess had the temerity to want control over her money, her business, her club and ultimately her ceo (or ex ceo once he'd been found out)
I could throw in other players too but then that would be a little irrelevent as other top clubs in Europe also sold top players. Skiverpool being one of them.
Okay Seed let's hear this wonderful plan that would've shown our ambition and stopped what has just happened - I doubt there will be anything new, nothing that hasn't been unpicked or shown to be untrue or irrelevent or just plain pie in the sky but go give it a go or are you just going to sit there sniping whenever your hemarrhoids start itching?

I don't think any Southampton player deserves to wear the england jersey- we finished 7th people. When there's english players in the champions league, why on earth would hodgson come to us for talent?! Chambers will flourish at arsenal like walcott, bale and chamberlin have done, and now he deserves his chance. When Clyne leaves for a big club playing in europe is when he will get his call up, and rightly so.

Of all the exports I think this is the one that could bite us on t'bum.

The others? Well with the wisdom of hindsight there seems to be an air of inevitability about their going.

Shaw was just great business no matter how good he eventually may become. Liarllana will one day be seen as good business simply because he would've been a thorn in the side of this club due to his attitude and he was becoming a luxury we could not afford. He showed his true character and we are well shot of him. I guess you could say the same of Lovren also. We did get a good return on him so I guess we should be grateful for that.

I don't understand why we felt we had to sell Chambers even though it was good money. But the management felt he could go and they made that decision - I just happen to have reservations about the wisdom especially given he could turn into one of the best utility defenders in the league at a time we are hurting for such defenders.

I think Long will turn into an asset - a multi million pound asset - well that remains to be seen but the lad can play football he just buzzes energy and must annoy the crap out of defenders - I just don't think he's a top class striker - he does not seem to have the poaching ability required. Time will tell I guess. A bit of a question mark over Pelle - but he may be a late developer a la SRL and he had some moments against Milwall which may have just shown us that once his feet are under the table we will see some more of it.
Not sure KL has underestimated anything mate which is why she reined him in before got too carried away. Not sure she underestimated his harsh talents either, she would have been aware of what he was capable of having watched him do it for her father. He was an absolute dictatorial, OCD perfectionist. He was great for this club until he started thinking pie in the sky and worse still pie in the sky with someone else's money. Now not wanting to take anything away from his achievements I will take something away from him. You and I could've done what he did in the long run which was surround himself with yes men (clever but yes men nevertheless) and tried to treat KL as an ever producing money tree. I will go one further too, if those billions had been allowed to roll into Saints you and I would have done pretty much the same with it as he would have done. We just might have been a lot more pleasant about it all.

Our board could have shown more ambition and kept them"
Been over and over this one mate - done it to death and the record is stuck.
I'll thrown you down a challenge - it should keep even you miserable enough to make you eventually happy.
The average Billionair (ess) is looking for a superior return on investment or an image, passport, right to reside etc..
KL actually wants our club to run like a swiss clock and earn a return, regretabbly football in every country and every league does not work like that, the swiss accountancy demands will screw us in the end because I can tell you they do not and indeed cannot do unexpected change, they want given formulas and football of all business's just cannot do that..

Don't forget Wellbeck the striker who doesn't score goals, the England set up is corrupt.
I hope Roy does come back to St Marys. Then we can tell him to " go away".

No matter how good CC becomes it is simply ridiculous and an act of both desperation and incompetence to pick him for England. He was just a bit part player for us last season and cannot possibly have the experience to deal with international football yet. Well done Woy. Your management of England gets more embarrassing by the day. But then after our disgraceful performance in the WC I can't see us sinking much lower. Is there anything worse than rock bottom? Any skunts out there? They should know the answer.

If not - call me a conspiracy nut (as opposed to been on the planet a long time, not totally dense, fairly discerning, suspicious of you and those that pull your strings, concerned, public spirited individual) "Just saying Woy......... no need to book a plane that quickly..........Woy

, Woy! Come back it was all meant as a spoof, or at least that's how it started".
Yep. Or our board could have shown more ambition of course and kept them.
Welcome Seed. Wasp stung you again?
Our board could have shown more ambition and kept them"
Been over and over this one mate - done it to death and the record is stuck.
I'll thrown you down a challenge - it should keep even you miserable enough to make you eventually happy.
The average Billionair (ess) is looking for a superior return on investment or an image, passport, right to reside etc..
KL actually wants our club to run like a swiss clock and earn a return, regretabbly football in every country and every league does not work like that, the swiss accountancy demands will screw us in the end because I can tell you they do not and indeed cannot do unexpected change, they want given formulas and football of all business's just cannot do that..
Correct me if I'm wrong someone please but didn't her journey to owning the club start with the death of her Dad?
We are led to believe she took the club a little reluctantly but started to take an interest and seemed to find herself enjoying the ownership and football in general.
Doubt she needs a passport her Swiss/German one which mean she can travel freely throughout Europe. She has a right to reside before she took over ownership and I would suspect she has a cosy little pad in Switzerland and paying a lot less tax than she would be expected to here.
NC had the club running like a swiss clock and it seems to be doing okay at the moment. Is there a business owner anywhere in the world who does not wish their business earns them as high a profit as can be squeezed out of it. If it doesn't make a profit it becomes a charity.
How she will operate her business is her business and remains to be seen. Whether her team can adapt to change or not also remains to be seen but so far the job being done under extreme pressure since about Xmas seems to be going middling to good in my opinion. You are, of course, and inevitably going to have your own.

I must have missed Bale flourishing at Arsenal. Just like I missed us coming 7th.Although I expect us to finish at least 7th this season.
Anything Moxy Poxytino can do Ronald K can do better.
COME ON YOU SAINTS.
If you read my comment then you will see I clearly didn't specifically say Bale flourished at Arsenal. Also we did finish 7th if you ignore Man Ushited. I personally think we will make Champions League this season, and I don't know if you realised but my comment was clearly a dig at Hodgson only going for players in big teams. I like what Liverpool have got going on, but with our youth system Hodgson is definitely missing a trick. REDKNAPP IN!!!
