Koeman lining up more signings

Ronald Koeman

Ronald Koeman

Saints boss Ronald Koeman confirmed he is not finished with his transfer activities after seeing his side play out a goalless draw with West Brom at St Mary’s.

Graziano Pelle was brought in by Koeman to provide goals but he struggled to make an impact and Koeman was under no illusions that there is yet more work to be done on his squad before the close of the window.

“We know inside what we need in the time we have,” he said.

“We will work to bring in one or two players. We need that - it will be a long season in England and on Tuesday we play in the League Cup and with that you need enough players of quality to give the competition in the squad.”

The start of the Koeman era on the south coast will prove instantly forgettable when compared to the impressive performance his new-look side put in at Anfield last weekend.

Saints may have lost 2-1 to Liverpool but Koeman felt his side were more at the races than they were in front of their own fans and praised keeper Fraser Forster for making a late save to deny West Brom victory.

“The result was better than last week but the feeling is different. It’s strange in football,” he added.

“We deserved last week much more than we got, but today it was difficult. We didn’t have the tempo to create more. We played against a West Brom side with good organisation, very compact, physical strong in defence.

“You need high quality in the cross and passing and we didn’t have that today.

“We like to have more tempo. Sometimes it’s too slow and gives the opponents chance to have good organisation. It was maybe a typical goalless match - thanks to Fraser Forster, he’s a good goalkeeper for the future.”

Hope that whoever we get, they are able to give Pelle the kind of service that will be more to his liking...
He deserves to be given more opportunities to show us what he can really do and I think (hope) that when he gets a goal or two he will grow in confidence and have a good season.

Agreed it was frustrating yesterday to watch him struggle, but he deserves his chance to adapt to life in the PL.
I wonder if Ron will give him a run out at Millwall too, he might get a goal there and could get him up and running.

Not seen Saints yet this season but am going to Millwall and West Ham. I thought we did well 2nd half at Anfield so was surprised to hear RK comments yesterday. He seems very down about the performance which is concerning so early in the season. I hope the cup game can lift the mood a bit as many on here seem as unhappy as RK! Also let's not judge Pelle on one performance. I recall that many thought than Rickie couldn't make the step up and he proved them all wrong. Give Pelle a chance.

I really don't understand why there's a lot of negative opinion about Pelle.

Nobody really stood out against West Brom, not even Forster, he made one save after all, but he didn't have an outstanding game.

Most people agreed that this new team would take time to gel, but after two games everyone's expecting us to be world beaters.
And don't forget, yesterdays game was our first home game and the new players were probably on edge.

Get behind Pelle and the new team, don't abuse or slag him off, by doing so, you could affect him in such a way that he will flop.
Or is that what some people want?

I bet it's the same people giving Pelle grief that are the anti Reed/Kreuger and Kat brigade.

Support The Saints and give them ALL a bit of time.

this has been a summer of disasters, really bad decisions by KL and her "Board" that in my opinion could easily end up costing us our premiership status. You just cant sell half your first team, buy in relatively cheap replacements and expect to survive. And yet that is exactly what we are expected to believe. We have had no answers, not about bedwetting you fool, but how about Krueger beginning to tell us the truth behind this summer s events. This aside, what really depressed me was Saints style of play yesterday. It is difficult to take in how a team that played possession football last season now resorted to route one hoof it up to Pelle route one football which was never likely to convince anyone that the team had the means to win the game and they didnt even come close. The only surprise is that we got a point. In short it is not the players who are now under pressure but Koeman himself. If he doesnt come to grips with the demands of the Premiership he could be quickly gone from the club. Three or four bad results and he would be. The change to a long passing game really surprised me, half the passes went astray and the team didnt look as if they had the faintest idea going forward. There was no need for this change imposed by Koeman who clearly doesnt want to play the same game as the team did last season. But guess what Poch and Spurs are flying , deservedly so, they could be the surprise package of the season it would not surprise me.

Insideoutcat got it spot on earlier in a post he made about last season - no plan B and always ran out of steam at 75 minutes. Impossible to judge Koeman's style after one home game against a team who shut up shop for long periods and who had obviously watched last week's Liverpool game, coz they just kept trying to float the ball between Fonte and Clyne.

They will. Then we will have an excellent squad with great strength in depth. Especially when J-Rod returns.

this has been a summer of disasters, really bad decisions by KL and her "Board" that in my opinion could easily end up costing us our premiership status.
Hmm, plastic sheets for you tonight then. Why the club looked to Europe for a proven manager when they could have could have come on here and found a gem like you astounds me ! I'm pretty sure the team got roasted after that performance, and can't believe that he said forget Liverpool, just hoof it from now on 'the fans will love it'. Look Monte, stay strong for me for a couple more weeks then we'll see a style emerging........ I don't think we should sack him yet, but I'm sure he's read and taken all your comments on board. Or maybe you could just follow Spurs from now on ?

Could be worse, see what happened to Fulham today ( they changed managers several times last year at the sniff of a bad result) be careful what you wish for pal

Many good points stated, but its not going to be an easy fix.Certainly the overpriced Shane Long isn't going to make the difference! Playing Pelle as target man is not what Saints have been used to in style of play of late!
We have a creative in depth midfield and a promising defence, but its scoring goals that will keep us up.Let's hope RK can bolster the attack and play some attractive play!.

Another one or two players of his choice and a couple of games under his belt, then we'll see. - Saying that did you see Spurs today, 4 - 0 up and poch was up berating any player who passed sideways, attack, attack attack. - Anyway nobody said it's easy being a Saints fan................ maybe we've all just forgotten that ![/p]
this has been a summer of disasters, really bad decisions by KL and her "Board" that in my opinion could easily end up costing us our premiership status. But guess what Poch and Spurs are flying , deservedly so, they could be the surprise package of the season it would not surprise me.[/p]
Many good points stated, but its not going to be an easy fix.Certainly the overpriced Shane Long isn't going to make the difference! Playing Pelle as target man is not what Saints have been used to in style of play of late! We have a creative in depth midfield and a promising defence, but its scoring goals that will keep us up.Let's hope RK can bolster the attack and play some attractive play!. peregrine73

Seems objective and wholly proportional to me. Would any of us hire someone who a track record of abject failure? I sure as heck wouldn't. Yet we have - and low-and-behold our best players depart and we play £20m for Pelle and Long, who he phrase cows ar$e and banjo could've been written for.

I just think it's probably just coz it's got the words 'Spurs' in it - peeps probably saw the first word, threw their coffee cups at the screen and went straight for the TDs! Just a theory :o)
Aha. Yes, maybe. In fairness i bloody hate the Spuds too :)
Maybe people need to start being careful to avoid opening their posts with words like;

Spurs
Rupert
Pochettino
Lovren
Liverpool
Guly
Harry
One in the crowd
etc etc

in order to avoid instant TDs....

Look you can't blame Robbie Savage as his comments were based on yesterday's performance which was poor and light years away from last season. However it is early days yet and things will hopefully improve including Pelle !
However I think the supporters are getting worried as I have never heard St a Mary's so quiet in the 2nd half. The problem was that there was nothing to get excited about. There were next to no shots on goal and we never looked like scoring.
The hand wringers will say this is negative however I would say based on yesterday's performance it's what it feels like to me at the moment and surely people are entitled to their opinions without getting criticised with those who hold a different opinion!
Bottom line there is something not right with the team at the moment they had no spark and as for the long ball game well it was just lousy to watch and what made it worse we weren't any good at it.
Let's hope Saturday was just a bad day at the office!

Perhaps if you took the trouble to keep up, you would know that Gaston is injured and not fit to play, as is Big Sam G. Didn't the magnificent Adam Lallana score the winner last year, perhaps that may be what we are missing? In my useless opinion, we just need a quality finisher and things would be much, much more satisfactory, early days.

As far as JWP is concerned he is yet again being asked to play out of his natural position - that is a creative centre midfielder a position he excels in in the England under 21s. He is now playing a forward role behind the strikers. WBA pushed forward yesterday reducing the space between our midfield and our strikers. He now plays with his back to goal as opposed to facing the goal. This requires adaptation. You're right on 2/3 occasions yesterday he was dispossessed due to a passes being made to him when he was heavily marked. What was frustrating was seeing him in space and not being given the ball despite him asking for it. Again the long ball was our downfall yesterday we didn't get the ball on the ground and pass it through the midfield. Our centre backs seem to play 'hot potato' with ball launching it long continuously. Having said this it is early days and I've no doubt it will come good. These are early days and I'm confident good times are just around the corner!

Well having just watched manure on motd2 I'm more than sure that we have got the better Dutch manager! I don't think manure were as poor last season under moyes as they have been in the 2 games they have played this season. I think we have a great chance of catching them this season!
Poor game yesterday but it wasn't 1 or 2 players fault, the whole team were poor, we had quite a few poor games last season aswell, It happens to every team and whilst we might have had a poor game we didn't lose and thats the important stat.
I hope Ronnie plays pelle on Tuesday so he gets more used to English football, he will come good given time and the right service.

As for Pochaliar, spuds only beat hoof with a last min goal last week and today beat a very poor, and I mean very poor, qpr team. When I see teams like qpr and palace play it leaves me with no fear of relegation. Qpr were absolutely awful today and weren't much better last week, what odds on old twitchy being the first manager to be sacked this season?

Come on Ronnie lets get 2-3 more players in and we can start to put teams like w brum away.

I make it about 90 million - 50 million so far giving us abut 40 million to spend sensibly this week and in January if we need to. I expect about 25 million spend on two players this week. Any advances?
We were given 30 million before we sold anyone. Now add 90 to that. We have lots of money left. Spend it now and have a good year.

JLS why are you always so hostile to people that don't love this board. I am still very suspicious of this board and haven't yet developed trust that they care about the club. I am however, just waiting to see what happens I hope to be proved wrong but am fully prepared not to be. All I want from this season is to stay up then use summer 15 to rebuild the club properly with a plan rather than the shambles that Reed and Krueger allowed to happen this summer. My issue isn't so much with the sales which seemed inevitable whether I liked it or not rather the lack of a plan to replace quality with quality. The strategy seemed reactionary rather than pro-active. The final point I will make is Reed was at the club last year but much lower profile so to say every club he's been at has been relegated is not strictly true.

The final point I will make is Reed was at the club last year but much lower profile so to say every club he's been at has been relegated is not strictly true. upwherewebelong

Give 'em a call and offer your pearls of wisdom as to who and how they should spend it all. I bet Les Reed, the Rambros and Freddie are gagging for your advice.

Work it out for yourself how much has been spend how much has to be kept for wages and how much may be spent in the next week and at the Xmas sales.

The money issue seems almost irrelevant given the bids we gave to players like Rojo and Hernandez only to be given the finger by them because they want to play for more 'prestigous' teams.

this has been a summer of disasters, really bad decisions by KL and her "Board" that in my opinion could easily end up costing us our premiership status. The only surprise is that we got a point. In short it is not the players who are now under pressure but Koeman himself. If he doesnt come to grips with the demands of the Premiership he could be quickly gone from the club. Three or four bad results and he would be. -25? You might be too quick to judge, but you have a point about the play. Kicking the ball about aimlessly for 90 minutes. It was a shambles. The only bright side is that Koeman seems to be aware of how dire it was. JWP was a huge disappointment and seemed to not have a clue where to be or what to expect from his teammates. Schneiderlin is a solid player as a terrier breaking up the other team's attack, but his passing is poor (soft and easily read by the opposition) and his decision-making too slow. If Spurs want to pay 25 million for him, maybe Saints should take it. And, the whole team basically ignored Clyne on the right and played into dead ends on the left flank most of the day. Tons of improvement needed.

How do you know there was £30mill available to Ronnie before anyone was sold? The club never announced anything it was just media speculation.
We don't know that the club received £90mill for the players who left either

Luke between £27 & £30mill, how much was in add ons?
Liarlanna £25mill, how much went to allmouth?
Dejerk £20mill, did Lyon have a sell on clause if so how much?
Rickie £4mill
Chambers £16mill.
That makes £92mill, or there abouts before taking off the sell on clauses which could be £10-£15mill. You also have to pay the players a loyalty bonus, yes for leaving! They get that, which includes image rights payments, unless they hand in a transfer request. These payments can also be in the millions. So we could be down to £60-£70mill.
We have spent around £48mill + agents fees on players with another £16mill needed if we sign the loan players on permanent deals next year. So thats £64mill + agents fees and signing on bonuses.
All that means most of the money made from the sales is either spent or accounted for. That is of course if the media are right with the fees received and paid, Ralph said on the radio that the figure for playerssold was quite a way off.
The club do need to spend more this window but we also need to have money to spend in Jan if needed.
I hope to see 2-3 more players come in this week, so come on Ronnie work your magic and convince your targets that this is the club for them!

We may have to wait until the January window to be at a point with any certainty where we most need additions to the squad, even if some are evident right now. Plenty of opinions on here of what we need, but I am keen to see how Gardos will perform. Just my opinion or rather my impatience, but I think its time we unleash Gardos and Taider this weekend against West Ham. I think if Taider can substitute his intensity for lack of out and out strength he might be more effective behind Pelle than JWP. Here's hoping Gardos proves to be a rock at the back and help Forster keep another clean sheet.

de heilegen - I really wanted him to work that all out for himself 'cos that's the only way he would have realized he's talking blx. Like so many of the football club owners we have posting their drivel on here. Sorry I meant their informed opinions of course.

Pretty good assessment of what is available methinks - of course we can never know for sure as the club quite rightly will never divulge the real nrs.

IMHO we need that winger that everyone is alluding to. I'd like to see another CB but maybe the Rambros will use the Jan sales for that to more accurately assess our defence (frustrates me but sort of makes sense from a financial point of view) Still think we need a nippy little striker. We could've squeezed another season or two out of Defoe.

BTW - anyone see that annoying, buzzing little mosquito Dyer? Hope he ain't back to his best when they come to town.

The big question is of course, Is there enough in the kitty to cover the purchase, wages, this fee, that fee, etc, etc, etc, left in the pot - can only hope so. Thanks for a sensible post.

Manure just spent over 60m squids for someone who by all accounts is a good player but not of the AC Milan, Barca, MankySchitty, RM standard. The world has truly gone mad.

Somewhere there is a young lad who could be picked up for a mill and groomed to excellence. We've had them before. All these superstars started out as 1m hopefuls.

Love your optimism and struggling to reach it but will continue trying.

Manure just spent over 60m squids for someone who by all accounts is a good player but not of the AC Milan, Barca, MankySchitty, RM standard. The world has truly gone mad. Somewhere there is a young lad who could be picked up for a mill and groomed to excellence. We've had them before. All these superstars started out as 1m hopefuls. this has been a summer of disasters, really bad decisions by KL and her "Board" that in my opinion could easily end up costing us our premiership status.
Put another record on will you?
Every time that I read one of your posts I think it's ground hog day.
You have nothing positive to say, zero insight in the game and bore the rest of us.
I bet it was you that wrote to Krueger and called him an idiot

Give 'em a call and offer your pearls of wisdom as to who and how they should spend it all. I bet Les Reed, the Rambros and Freddie are gagging for your advice.

Work it out for yourself how much has been spend how much has to be kept for wages and how much may be spent in the next week and at the Xmas sales.
I await your conclusion and the answer you get from all those full of crap with immense interest and glee of course - in fact boooger all interest and mainly glee.
I don't "Love this board". I don't think I've ever met any one of them and the likelihood is that will not change.

I'm sure that like most people they have made mistakes and met those, "If only I could put the clock back" moments. The big difference being when they have done it it's usually in the public eye or perception. When you and I do it we can usually cover our own putendas.

What you want from the season is not a million miles away from what I've been hoping for (and said so whilst posting here) mid-table obscurity for this season (as long as we entertain along the way) with a view to a better season next time round.

The situation surrounding the exodus has been done to death and I'm not really going to start all that finger pointing again - it solved nothing the first fifty or so times around and won't this time either. Could the board have seen it coming? - NC would be the one to answer that best and he, with his manager is implicated in it so the questions are best left unasked - we are never going to get to the truth. The remaining people of influence at the club were left with a situation unparalleled in football history and every week brought in another nightmare.

IMHO - we should have brought in an interim manager to at least have another pair of hands to take the strain. The Rambros, once they had shown interest would've been put into situ the day after they registered interest so saving embarrassing and costly weeks of nothingness other than fan discontent and suspicion. The, will they, won't they went on way too long for my liking.

I have faith in the current board for the long term good of the club, for example, the business interests the club is branching out into - mainly because I've been saying for many years that the future for income for small clubs like us is not confined within the stadium and fingers in several pies seems the sensible and profitable way to go. As supporters we will never hear exactly what the business gurus and bean counters are up to or experimenting with - only the success stories will be leaked out of the boardroom.
Do I have blind faith - almost because I have no other choice - these are the people Katharina and those she listens to have decided to employ and these are what I'm stuck with (as are you) If they don't fill her requirements she will get rid for better or for worse - no point me or anyone else getting irate over their decisions, we have no recourse, it's not our money, not our business - we're just the mugs who love football and more importantly love the way we hope Saints are going to present their football. What is the point of getting bent out of shape over something over which I have absolutely no control in the slightest? There isn't, so I make a rational decision that supporting no matter what, has a better chance of having a positive outcome for all than ranting irrationally on a forum that already has dozens of others wailing into their cider, sack the board (Hmmm - how?) Calling the benefactor and those striving to ensure our success all sorts of things (when they will never get to read those thoughts anyway) and it makes no logical sense by any measure.

Hostile is an interesting word - There is hostility in abundance on this forum (and probably many others too - I don't know I only post here)
That hostility is frequently covering true ignorance, ill thought out conclusions, a lack of intelligence and anger. I become "Hostile" your word not mine, when I see all of the above on display concerning a subject which, with just a little thought from the poster may have led them, through their own cognitions, to have formed a more logical, less emotional, less "Hostile" conclusion to that which may be troubling them.
Right now I am making the completely rational decision to cease and desist in order to get hostile with a gammon steak covered in mushrooms, onions and eggs. I wish you all a pleasant, non hostile day unless you are determined to be a **** and at least until this evening I'll leave it to others to point out the error of your ways. Take care.

Also let's not judge Pelle on one performance. I recall that many thought than Rickie couldn't make the step up and he proved them all wrong. Give Pelle a chance.
Millwall 2 -1
Not a bad shout. I'll check the odds and might have a cheeky £5 on that and a 6-0 Stoke win against the skunts.....now run away fishfiddler.

Take care.
After that excellent post im also going to take the rational decision to go for a pint and a Sunday roast.

Up the saints.

This is not a pop at you we have gotten off on the wrong foot and if that is my fault I truly apologise.

However, in the main it's not the rational posters on here that are the ones that have a go if someone does not share their opinion, it maybe they have the intelligence to put up a good alternative opinion, maybe that's what gets up some people noses.

in my opinion its those that come on here criticising the club the board the players with opinions you could drive a bus through IMO and perhaps when they have a few holes picked in their opinions the abuse starts.

Again I am sure you are and have been a very good supporter of our great club, certainly a better on that some our players have proven to be in recent weeks.

Take care.
After that excellent post im also going to take the rational decision to go for a pint and a Sunday roast.

Up the saints.
Try not to gob off whilst you're out and call anyone a to$$er to their face and all that....eh?
I tend to avoid toss?rs, never gob off on anything I can't deliver on, and am never abusive or rude unless provoked.

Did you for once have anything you would like to say that is closely related to football or the support of our great club?
Nothing you'd agree with or not get upset and abusive about....but then that does seem to be the trend on here.
You carry on and talk about your roast dinners and abuse anyone that doesn't share your opinions if that floats your boat.
I'll continue to support my great club as I've always done...passionately.

Shall we call a truce, or shall I send for the pistols?
Pass the port and we'll toast the Saints and a rosy red and white future.....The pistols can stay locked away in the cellar with the Champagne that we'll use to celebrate Pelle's first goal.......or shall we make it our first win of the season?

How is this post on a minus score?

Seems objective and wholly proportional to me. Would any of us hire someone who a track record of abject failure? I sure as heck wouldn't. Yet we have - and low-and-behold our best players depart and we play £20m for Pelle and Long, who he phrase cows ar$e and banjo could've been written for.

Theres being loyal to the club, then there's just ridiculously pigheaded burying of heads in sand...
I just think it's probably just coz it's got the words 'Spurs' in it - peeps probably saw the first word, threw their coffee cups at the screen and went straight for the TDs! Just a theory :o)
I have another theory. Maybe people don't agree with your negativity.
Our best players left - same with a great many clubs at the end of the season all over Europe if a top player wants to go there's a better than 50/50 chance he'll go. They go hopefully for a profit to enable the owner to put a bit in their pocket and to find a cheaper replacement who one day will make the step between ordinary and outstanding. Sometimes they don't.
It's got nothing to do with heads in sand. Most of us are very aware of how football works and this is how it works. The small clubs will increasingly get done over at the end of every season by the big boys and guess what some of the expensive players moving on to the big clubs won't make the grade there either.
So instead of whining about the facts of big business in football what is your answer to the plight that Saints and the other also rans find themselves in?
Make it clear and easy to understand because we mere underlings are not equipped to grasp the realities in quite the same way your superior intellect clearly has.
